Obituary for Billy W. Hand

Billy W. HandBilly W. Hand, age 81 of Springfield, died Thursday, August 10, 2017 at his home. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the Oakhurst Chapel of Robertson County Funeral Home with Rev. James Dean and Bro. Martin Babb officiating. Burial will follow in Springfield Memorial Gardens with Jim Hall, Wayne Hall, Mark Hand, Jimmy Hand, Mark Hand, Jr., Noah Woodrum, and Nate Woodrum serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Chapel Class of Springfield Baptist Church. Employees of Gupton Motor Company, David and Alice Seaborn, David Rainwater, Dale Winters, Todd Bassinger, Kenneth Hand, Wayne Jones, Craig Gardner, Donnie Gupton, Mike Gupton, Ken Gupton, and Daniel Gupton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 4 until 8 PM and Tuesday from 9 AM until the hour of service.

Mr. Hand was born July 5, 1936 in Robertson County to the late J.C. and Moleane Chester Hand. He was a member of Springfield Baptist Church, Gideon’s International, and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a roofer and after retiring from that he worked at Gupton Motors. In his spare time, he loved riding his Harley motorcycle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Roark Hand; son, Michael Hand; brothers, J.C. “Son” Hand, Jr. William L. Hand, and Howard Kempf Hand; and sister, Elsie Hall.

floral squareHe is survived by his daughter, Sandra Self and husband Martin of Hendersonville, sisters-in-law, Lucille Hand of Greenbrier, Johnnie Hand of Springfield, Cheryl Felts of Springfield, and Sarah E. Bibee of Springfield; devoted niece, Sharon Porter of Springfield; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

The family request, if so desired, for memorial contributions be made to Gideon’s International, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or the Wounded Warrior Project. All donations can be sent c/o Robertson County Funeral Home.

Obituary for Laurie Murphy

Laurie MurphyLaurie Nell Murphy, 56, of Springfield, died Wednesday August 9, 2017 peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services were conducted Monday August 14th at 11:00 a.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Wallace and Pastor Roger Patton officiating. Interment followed in Springfield Memorial Gardens with Vishesh Chachra, Michael Marvin, Henry Dean, James T. Marshall, Perry Pratt, Donnie Brake, Keith Graves, Wayne “Hootie” Burton serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Robertson County Fair Board, employees of Hollingsworth Oil Company, Joe Hart, Philip Hart, Bruce Duffer, Brandon, Elizabeth, Jason, Lacy Duffer, Tristan, and Deason Duffer, Stephanie May, Nick, Angela, and Colby Rogers, Carol and Mike Justice, Dr. Josh and Bethany Justice, Sarah and Jody Dorris, Celeste Armstrong, Ceanna Armstrong, Carol Ann, Timmy, and Anna Katherine Akins, Clyde and Bettye Richert. The family received friends on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Laurie was born September 1, 1960 in Robertson County to Ivy Nell Roe Murphy and the late James Warren Murphy. She was a member for many years of Mt. Denson Cumberland Presbyterian Church and recently moved her membership to Springfield First United Methodist Church. Laurie worked for Hollingsworth Oil, Northcrest Medical Center, and CEI over the years. She was a member of the Jaycees and the Robertson County Fair Board for over 30 years.

floral squareIn addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents: James Clarence and Eva Adams Murphy, Richard Nathan and Flora Dell Roe. Laurie is survived by her mother: Ivy Nell Murphy of Springfield, her brother: James Richard Murphy of Springfield, nieces: Marissa Lynn (Vishesh) Chachra and Jamie Leigh (Michael) Marvin, and by her great nephews: James Chandler and Carter Paul Marvin.

Dorothy BlackDorothy “Dot” Black, age 89, of Springfield, died Monday, August 14, 2017 at Vanco Manor is Goodlettsville. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at 2pm in the chapel of the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Brother Michael Duff officiating. Burial will follow in the Springfield Memorial Gardens with Eric Black, Landon Black, Todd Walker, Adam Walker, Bart Walker, Jay Tant, Nico Gregali and Jason McNeal serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 from 4-8pm and again on Wednesday from 12pm until the hour of service at 2pm.

Mrs. Black was born December 20, 1927 in Robertson County to the late Jasper and Alice Murphey Parker. She worked as an inspector at Wilson Sporting Good until her retirement. Mrs. Black was a long-time member of Flewellyn Baptist Church and was a current member of Lights Chapel Baptist Church.

Mrs. Black is survived by her sons, Jimmy (Barbara) Black and John (Gloria) Black, both of Springfield; daughters, Donna (Jackie) Mink of Nashville, Wanda (Daryle) Walker of Springfield and Diane (Tom) Walker of Greenbrier; brother, J.L. Parker of Lebanon; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery with David Smith, Jerry Smith, Walter Darnall, Brandon Beaty, Ricky Smith and Roger Morris serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 4-8pm and again on Friday from 9am until the hour of service at 2pm.

Mr. Morris was born December 31, 1956 in California to the late Billy C. and Jackie Rogers Morris. He worked as a police officer, was a professional painter and member of the Grace Chapel Church of God of Prophecy in Ashland City.

Mr. Morris is survived by his son, Matt Poole of Adams; daughters, Tiffany Morris of Cedar Hill, Christina (Brandon) Beaty of Russellville, Jessica Poole of Springfield, Heather (Walter) Darnall of Adams and MaKenzie Butler of Adams; brother, Roger (Lisa) Morris of Cookeville; grandchildren, Austin Beaty, Sierra Beaty, Kyle Whittington, Wyatt Darnall, Allie Darnall, Blake Marlow, Trevor Marlow and Nathan Butler; and the loving mother of his children, Brenda Whiting.

Carl Wayne WagonerAge 77 of White House passed away Sunday, August 13, 2017 at his home. He was born January 14, 1940 in Michigan to Harvey Leroy and Clara B. Metzger Wagoner. He worked as a shipping and receiving manager with Sears before his retirement. He loved fishing and Southern gospel music and was a member of the Church at Grace Park.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, AnnaBelle (John) Root and DonnaBelle (David) Flory; brother, Norman Wagoner. He is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Barbara Wagoner, White House, TN; son, Bart Allen Wagoner, Lewisville, Indiana; daughters, Maria (Harry) Dorris, White House, TN and Trisha (Nick) Russo Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin; sister, Frances (Kenneth) McGill, Tampa, Florida; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Martha Anne HughesMartha Anne Hughes, age 71, of Nashville passed away Friday, August 11, 2017 at her residence. Austin & Bell Funeral Home Greenbrier is in charge of arrangements.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Bellwood Cemetery in Adams, TN. Burial will follow in Bellwood Cemetery.

Martha was born March 26, 1946 in Springfield, TN to the late George Thomas and Ruby Florence Edwards Hughes. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Vernon Douglas Hughes, Betty Sue Calkins, George Edward Hughes, John Thomas Hughes, John floral squareEdward Hughes, Jack Lewis Hughes and Sadie Louise Hughes.

She graduated from Greenbrier High School and was employed as a Control Clerk at H.G. Hill Grocery stores for 28 years.

She is survived by several nephews and nieces. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

David AbernathyAge 65 of White House passed away Thursday, August 10, 2017 at his home. He was born December 12, 1951 in Nashville, TN to Thomas K. and Dorothy Jean Terry Abernathy. He worked in security for CMT. He was an artist. and bass guitar musician. He loved constructing models and was a member of the NRA. He was a Proud Patriot who proudly served his country in the US Army in Vietnam and in Panama. He also served in the Reserves.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas Abernathy, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Bonnye Abernathy; 5 children; 1 brother; 1 sister; 12 grandchildren.

Mrs. Henderson was born July 18, 1942 in Robertson County to the late Moulton and Hattie Miller Frey. She was a 1960 graduate of Coopertown High School, worked as a Human Resources Manager at Unarco for 47 years and was a member of the Flewellyn Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Henderson is preceded in death by her first husband, Tommy Brown; brother, Bill Frey; and sisters, Martha Jane “Sis” Rawls and Rebecca Pickering. She is survived by her husband, Porter Henderson; step-sons, Tim (Lauran) Henderson of Nashville, Kevin Henderson of Wheeling, IL and John (Angela) Henderson of Gallatin; step-daughter, Beth (Tim Smith) Walker of Pleasant View; sister, Nancy Crawford of Springfield; sister-in-law, Naomi Frey of Springfield; special friends, Joyce Choate of Goodlettsville and Shearon Kehl of floral squareIndianapolis, IN; God-children, Angela (Terry) Patton of Goodlettsville and Dana (Ted) Horner of White House; 7 step-grandchildren; and 4 step-great-grandchildren. James Robert PattersonAge 72 of Bethpage, TN went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at his home. He was born May 31, 1945 in Nashville, TN to David Elzie and Margie Ellis Patterson. He worked in car sales with Wilson County Motors for the past 15 years and was a minister of the gospel. He was currently the pastor of Abundant Grace Fellowship, former pastor of Cookeville First Assembly of God. a state overseer for the Church of God and was a member of American Legion Post #206 in White House, TN. He proudly served his country in Vietnam.

He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Hilda Jo Patterson; stillborn son, Brian Keith Patterson. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Debra Patterson, Bethpage, TN; son, Jason Patterson; daughters, Micheline (Steve) Whitaker and Amy (Robert) Mallard, all of Millersville, TN; brother, Donald (Shannon) Patterson, White House, TN; sister, Bonita (Tom) Lee, Lebanon, TN; 5 grandchildren, Tommy, Travis, Joshua, Diamond and Justin; 6 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Patterson was born March 9, 1932 in Springfield, TN to the late James and Pauline Durham Briggs. She worked as a sales person at Fred’s Nursery for many years and was of the Baptist Faith.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Patterson is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Patterson, her sister, Rachel Browning, and her brothers-in-law, Wayne Brown and Charles Johnson. Mrs. Patterson is survived by her sons, James Johnson of Springfield and Robert (Laura) Johnson of Greenbrier; sisters, Sue Johnson of floral squareAdairville, KY and Carolyn Brown of Springfield; brother-in-law, Billy Browning of Springfield; grandchildren, Emily (Chad) Diehl, Beth (Troy) Henley and Amy (Dwight) Dorris; and 7 great-grandchildren.
