New details have emerged on a device that was found attached to a vehicle owned by a Greenbrier resident Saturday afternoon. Smokey spoke to, Donald Johnson, the owner of the vehicle that the device was attached to on Saturday night. (See video below) Johnson told Smokey Barn News that he was changing the tire on his car when he found the device tucked up in the wheelwell of his vehicle. Johnson said, to him, it looked like a bomb and authorities agreed.  Police immediately taped off the street and evacuated near by homes.

Smokey has now learned from Greenbrier police that the “device” was in reality, a “home made GPS tracking device.” It seems that someone was very interested in either the location of Mr. Johnson’s vehicle or Mr. Johnson himself.

The incident began just before 5:00pm Saturday night when the Greenbrier Police department responded to a residence on Church Street after receiving a report that a suspicious device had been found attached to a private vehicle. With the help of the Tennessee Highway Patrol bomb disposal unit, the device was successfully recovered.

Springfield arms permit classesAccording to Greenbrier Police, “Once the device was able to be safely examined, it was determined that it was apparently a homemade GPS tracking device. The device was attached with wires to a six volt battery, wrapped with electrical tape, and then placed onto the underside of the vehicle.”

Police also said that, after testing, the battery was dead. Police also said it’s impossible to know how long the device was attached to the vehicle and they are tracking down the previous owner of the vehicle as well.

Greenbrier Police released the following statement Monday morning, “The Greenbrier Police Department wishes to thank the residents who were displaced from their homes for their patience while this device was being recovered. We further wish to advise the community that no danger exists.”

Greenbrier police went on to say that, “Although this device contained certain elements that could be used in constructing an improvised explosive device, we believe the intent of the device was to monitor, rather than harm, unknown individual(s).”

The Greenbrier Police Department is currently conducting an investigation to determine who placed this device on the vehicle and why.

Once the person is identified, the case will be presented to the Robertson County District Attorney’s Office to determine what, if any, charges will be placed.
