Seven Year Old Brings Loaded Gun To School: Shows Classmate

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A seven-year-old student at Westside elementary in Springfield brought a 9 mm handgun to school today. Officials became aware of the gun after the student showed it to another student and that student alerted staff members.

According to Springfield Police Chief David Thompson, there doesn’t appear to be any malicious intent in the child’s decision to bring the gun to school. “It looks like he just wanted to show it off,” Chief Thompson said.

The student was taken to the principal’s office and a 9mm handgun was retrieved from his backpack. The handgun was loaded. The assistant Principal contacted DCS.

The school was immediately placed on a soft lockdown and Central Office personnel were notified. The Springfield Police Department, and the Department of Children’s Services were contacted and responded to assist with the situation.

After the gun was confiscated it was turned over to Springfield police where it was taken into evidence and it is presently being stored at the Springfield police station on Willow St. In Springfield.

Any charges stemming from the child bringing the gun to school will be contingent on where the gun was stored and if there was any negligence involved, but at the moment the origin of the gun is unknown.

The student was cited for unlawful possession of a firearm and was released to DCS for placement.

The important thing to remember ( in this case) according to police, is the child had no malicious intent and the weapon did not discharge, making this story more about proper gun storage.
