SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A Springfield man barricaded himself inside of a home for about an hour Saturday before peacefully surrendering himself to police.

The standoff started around 5:07pm at a home located near the intersection of Richard St and Central Ave, directly across from Elm Wood Cemetery. MAP

According to Springfield Police Chief David Thompson, the suspect, identified as 22 year old Oscar Perez Matias, of Springfield, had been drinking heavily and allegedly threatened to kill a woman and her children in the home following an altercation with another individual at the home.

The woman and her children were able to escape the home and call police. The suspect stayed inside the home with two handguns and a knife, Thompson said,  the weapons were recovered following the standoff.

Springfield Police employed a Spanish Speaking interpreter to assist in the negotiations and after about an hour the suspect surrendered.

Springfield Police cordoned  off the area and asked residents to stay inside their homes. Police vehicles were completely blocking the entrance to Elmwood Cemetery. An event scheduled to start at 6:pm at the cemetery called “Evening At Elmwood” had to be moved to the Senior Center in Springfield.

Chief Thompson indicated the suspect did appear to have been in an altercation but otherwise no one was injured in the standoff. Police said that they are looking for the other individual involved in the earlier altercation that fled the scene.

Matias was transported to the Robertson County Detention Facility in Springfield where he is being held on a $75,000 bond under the charge of Aggravated Domestic Assault.

Chief Thompson told Smokey Barn News that the the assistance by the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office with manpower and coverage on the perimeter was “very much appreciated.”

The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office, Springfield Police, Robertson County EMS and the Springfield Fire Department all responded to the scene.
