Hwy 49 was CLOSED for most of the day Wednesday due to a tragic accident that occurred around 5:30AM.

The accident was head-on and involved a passenger car and a semi. One occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Tennessee Hwy Patrol, a Chevy Impala driven by Antonio Crawford age 41 of Madison along with passenger Ventrell Blakemore age 25 of Springfield were traveling westbound on State HWY 49 near the intersection of Draughon Rd this morning around 5:45am. (Exact Location Of Wreck)  A tractor trailer driven by Glen R Nash age 57 of Ashland City was hauling concrete slabs while traveling east bound on State Hwy 49. The two collided head on killing Ventrell Blakemore instantly and several hours later Antonio Crawford succumbed to his injuries and also died. The driver of the semi Glen Nash was transported to NorthCrest Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

According to the THP, the Chevy Impala drifted left into the travel lane of the tractor trailer. The driver of the tractor trailer observed the Chevy approaching and applied brakes lightly before head on contact was made. The Impala left the roadway toward the left and came to an uncontrolled rest facing south. The driver of the tractor trailer was forced off the roadway to the right and came to an uncontrolled rest facing west. The passenger of the Chevy was deceased at the scene.

According to the THP report Blakemore was not wearing a seat-belt at the time of the crash. Antonio Crawford was wearing his seat-belt, he was transported to Vanderbilt via LifeFlight where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The accident remains under investigation. According to the THP, drugs and alcohol were found in the Chevy Impala and police are investigating to see if they played a role but at the moment the cause of the accident is unclear. Police have asked for blood toxicology tests but that is standard procedure for accidents involving a fatality.
