7 Acres Of Tobacco Lost In Barn Fire Over Night

Cedar Hill TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Seven acres of tobacco were lost in a barn fire late Tuesday just outside Coopertown.

The barn, located on Gause Rd with a Cedar Hill address, MAP was fully involved when the Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department arrived, according to Deputy Fire Chief Derek Noe.

Firefighters were called to the barn at 10:47pm and stayed for about two hours, Noe said. Pleasant View sent two engines to battle the blaze. The owner told firefighters that the barn was actively firing tobacco.

According to Noe, there were other buildings near the structure but firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading.

Adjacent to the barn was a lean-to covering farm equipment that was also lost in the fire.

As far as a cause, the barn was too far gone to know exactly what started the fire, Noe said.

The owner told firefighters that the tobacco lost in the fire was the first crop of the season. “That was his first crop, which is normally the higher dollar tobacco that he lost. It was the last firing, they were getting ready to take it down. He was truly at the end of the cycle, so a lot of work went in to that,” Noe said.

According to Noe, the farmer was not carrying insurance on the barn.  The owner told Smokey Barn News, with the farm equipment, crop and the barn, it was about a $100,000 loss.

Other than the Pleasant View Fire Department, Robertson County EMS also responded. No injuries were reported in the fire.
