96-Yr-Old Woman Hospitalized After Home Fire

STORY UPDATED: Home reignites overnight.

CROSS PLAINS TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A 96-year-old woman was transported to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville after her home caught fire Tuesday afternoon.

According to Cross Plains Fire Chief Tommy Jackson, the fire started in the kitchen around 1 pm. “She was cooking and went to put some clothes in the dryer. When she returned the kitchen was on fire,” Chief Jackson said.

The 96-year-old resident suffered mild smoke inhalation and is expected to recover however, due to her age, she was placed in intensive care. She is currently listed in stable condition.

Firefighters from Cross Plains, the White House Community Volunteer Fire Department, White House City Fire Department, and the Orlinda Fire Department were able to save two bedrooms and the basement were saved but two-thirds of the home suffered heavy fire and some water damage.

Robertson County EMS and the Emergency Management Agency assisted firefighters as they battled the blaze.

UPDATE: Around 10:30 PM this evening firefighters were called back to the home which had reignited. When first responders arrived the home was fully involved.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon firefighters were able to recover items from inside the home and the basement is likely still intact but the home will be classified as a total loss, according to Cross Plains Fire Chief Tommy Jackson.

According to Chief Jackson, Cross Plains Fire with the assistance of the Orlinda Fire Department, the White House Community Volunteer Fire Department and White House City stayed at the scene for several hours this afternoon putting a large amount of water one the home making the reignition somewhat surprising. According to Chief Jackson, the cause of the reignition will likely be due to the age of the home and dry conditions.

No injuries were reported this evening.
