SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) –The officers and members of Springfield Post 48, American Legion, wish to congratulate this year’s students who will be attending American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxillary Girls State.

Students from High Schools across the state will be attending. Boys State is being held at Tennessee Technological University, in Cookeville, TN from May 19 – May 25, 2019 and Girls State is being held at Lipscomb University, in Nashville, TN from May 26 – Jun 1, 2019.

“At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.”

The purpose of Girls State is “to provide an outstanding, unique, and coveted educational opportunity for the young women of our nation that instills the basic ideals and principles of American government through the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation citizenship training programs.” “The American Legion Auxiliary believes that educating youth about the basic ideals and principles of government will help ensure the survival of our democracy.”

Dr. Dale Barner, Post 48 Commander states, “It is our honor and privilege to support these programs, which will produce our future local, state, and national leaders. A significant portion of our fundraisers, such as “Fair Parking” goes towards supporting these programs, as well as other Americanism programs and Veterans Affairs. We wish these students success in both the knowledge they will acquire and the friendships they will form.”

Community members interested in supporting our youth in Boys State/Nation and Girls State/Nation should contact Commander Dale Barner at (615) 382-3000 or their High School Guidance Counselor. We need to provide this opportunity to as many of our youth as possible.
