Chemical Spill Closes Greenbrier High (UPDATED)

 

spillGreenbrier High school was closed and all classes canceled Tuesday due to a chemical spill that occurred some time during the night inside the facility, officials told Smokey Barn News.

HazMat teams with the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency were called in to clean up the spill that included, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, chromic acid, and sulfuric acid, according to E.M.A. director R.L Douglas. E.M.A, then called First-Response to remove the chemicals and ventilate the building.

E.M.A. officials have assured Smokey Barn News that the facility will be safe later this afternoon. School officials are waiting on the “all clear” from E.M.A. to allow faculty members and students back inside the building but regular classes were canceled for the day.

Ichiban 300 adGreenbrier High School will be closed for the day, Tuesday, Aug. 12, due to a chemical spill in the building overnight. There will be no classes.

Robertson County Emergency Management and Greenbrier Fire Department personnel secured the building around 7:00 a.m., and it is expected to be ready for occupancy again sometime this afternoon.

This event does not affect Greenbrier Middle or Elementary Schools, which are on a regular class schedule.

An announcement will be made later in the day regarding the status of tonight’s planned GHS Open House.
