Critically Wounded Deputy Josh Wiley Back At Work

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – After being critically wounded during an inmate attack back in June, Josh Wiley returned to duty today.

“We are thrilled to have Josh back to work,” said Sheriff Bill Holt. “He is a walking miracle and God has truly blessed him, his family, and the sheriff’s office during these past few months.”

Back in June 2017 Deputy Josh Wiley was shot multiple times while transporting a prisoner to Vanderbilt’s 100 Oaks Campus in Nashville for a medical appointment.

“An inmate attacked an officer and the inmate has been shot and is now deceased,” said Robertson County Sheriff’s Office PIO Ryan Martin the day of the attack.

Deputies Josh Wiley and Tomisha Jones were transporting an inmate to a medical appointment from the Robertson County Jail when the incident occurred.

According to Metro Nashville Police, who are in charge of the investigation, Rodney Cole, 37, of Henning Tennessee, a convicted bank robber was being transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center for a routine medical appointment on the third floor at 719 Thompson Lane.

Cole requested to use the restroom and was accompanied by Deputy Wiley. Deputy Jones soon heard yelling coming from the bathroom and ran to assist.

When Deputy Jones entered the bathroom she saw the prisoner (Cole) on top of Deputy Wiley. Cole was repeatedly stabbing Wiley with a long screwdriver. During the ensuing struggle between the two deputies and Cole, multiple shots were fired and Deputy Wiley was critically injured. Mr. Cole died at the scene.

Cole’s 15-year sentence for bank robbery began in 2013. He had previous convictions for aggravated robbery, robbery, burglary, and theft.
