Teen Killed In Fatal Hwy 161 Crash Friday Night
SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Highway 161 was closed for several hours following a fatal single-vehicle rollover crash just outside of Springfield Friday evening.
The crash occurred around 9:30 PM in the 5000 block of Highway 161. (MAP) It was well after 1 am before the roadway is clear and re-opened.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
According to the THP, the vehicle (a 2002 Honda Accord, traveling east on Hwy 161) crossed the center double yellow line, left the roadway and encountered an embankment. The vehicle then traveled up the embankment and struck a utility pole. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was torn in half, the two halves landing some twenty feet apart in a field. The impact caused an interruption in power in the area.
The driver, now identified as Sebastian Miguel Diego, 18 of Springfield, did not survive, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. There was no mention of drugs or alcohol in the THP’s report and according to accident investigators, Diego was restrained at the time of the crash. Speed and weather conditions are suspected to be the key factors in this crash.

Hwy 161 was one of two main arteries in Robertson County closed Friday night due to rollover crashes. Around 11:30 pm Friday evening Hwy 76 between Springfield and White House was also closed while the THP investigated another rollover crash. Similar to the crash on Hwy 161, the vehicle left the road, impacted a utility pole and overturned. That crash also interrupted power to surrounding homes for several hours. The driver was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
