Father, Daughter Killed In Fatal Hwy 31E Crash Friday

PORTLAND TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – According to the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, calls started coming in at 8:43pm Friday night about a serious crash on Hwy 31 East just South of North Williams Rd in Bethpage in Sumner County. MAP

Accident re-constructionists worked through the night and have preliminarily released the details of the crash. Investigators say that Sarah Peery, 22, of Portland, driving with her father Michael Peery, 55, of Westmorland in the front passenger seat, were traveling South on 32E when they encountered a North bound Chevy pickup attempting to pass.

With the truck now in her lane heading towards her head on, Sarah swerved to avoid it but in doing so over-corrected and swerved into the North bound lane. The vehicle carrying Sarah and her father was struck on the passenger side by a 2001 Ford pickup truck driven by Cody Simon, 25, of Westmorland.

The impact caused heavy front end and side damage to the Peery vehicle. Police say the vehicle carrying the Peery’s was struck at the front wheel well.

According to Chief Deputy Aaron Pickard with the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, Sarah and her father Michael both died at the scene.

After impact Simon’s pickup left the roadway, rolled down an embankment and caught on fire. Both vehicles were about 50 feet apart after the initial collision. Simon was able to escape his pickup and was transported to Sumner Regional Medical Center with non life threatening injuries.


A
witness to the crash followed the pickup that was attempting to pass and was able to provide police with details about the suspect vehicle to Detectives. That information has lead to the identification of a possible suspect. The investigation is still ongoing and toxicology reports are pending, Police say.

According to Chief Deputy Pickard, Sarah and her father Michael  were both wearing their seat belts.

According to her Facebook page, Sarah was a Dental Assistant at Associated Children’s Dentistry in Mt Juliet, TN. and studied to be a Dental Assistant at Volunteer State Community College.

Friends tell Smokey Barn News that Sarah had a beautiful personality. She was always smiling and had a positive young minded spirit. Great daughter, friend, sister. Kinder heart.

A memorial service for Michael Peery will conducted at Strong Tower Church in Westmoreland on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.. A gathering of family and friends will begin one prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery. MORE

Visitation for Sarah Peery will be at 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2016, and after 10 a.m., Wednesday. Funeral service is 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home. Interment is at Old Brush Cemetery. MORE
