Fort Campbell Helicopter Crashes In Clarksville
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. (Smokey Barn News) – Two 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) pilots were killed when their helicopter crashed near Fort Campbell, Ky., at approximately 7 p.m. Dec. 2. The crewmembers were flying a two-seat AH-64D Apache during a routine training mission when the aircraft went down approximately 12 miles south of Fort Campbell.
According to WKRN News 2, the search for the downed helicopter began around 7:oo p.m. Wednesday evening near the Dickson-Cheatham county line after Fort Campbell told the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office they were missing an aircraft.
The Apache helicopter crashed in a wooded area in Clarksville off Gholson Road and Hickory Point Rd MAP near the Cumberland River for unknown reasons.
EMS officials told News 2 it was on fire when it was located.
Sandra Brandon with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office told News 2 the area is very hilly and roads are curvy, so the recovery of the crashed aircraft will be difficult.
A mechanic with the U.S. Army told News 2 that Apaches are fighter helicopters and very common for their branch of the military. He also said that at Fort Campbell they’re used mostly by the 3rd Battalion and 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.
According to Maj. Allen Hill, 101st Airborne Division Deputy Public Affairs Officer, “Two 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) pilots were killed when their helicopter crashed near Fort Campbell, Ky., at approximately 7 p.m. Dec. 2. The crewmembers were flying a two-seat AH-64D Apache during a routine training mission when the aircraft went down approximately 12 miles south of Fort Campbell.
“The area has been secured by Fort Campbell Military Police in conjunction with Montgomery County (Tenn.) Law Enforcement. There has been no determination of the cause of the accident and the incident is currently under investigation by the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center.
“The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.”
