Helicopter Crashes At Springfield/Robertson Airport (UPDATE)

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News)  – Two people walked away without injuries after a private helicopter crashed at the Springfield/Robertson County Airport Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Airport Manager Jamie Jones, the very experienced pilot was the victim of rotor stall and ground topography. According to Jones, the aircraft was coming in low-taxi in a very low hover around 6 pm. Winds were coming out of the North. According to Jones, the helicopter experienced tail rotor stall or a lack of airflow to the tail rotor.

The rotor stall caused the craft to rotate out of control. As the pilot tried to regain control of the aircraft it drifted over the grass and at some point tipped forward allowing the main rotor to make contact with a raised area or mound in the middle grass area about 5 feet high.

If the ground had been level, Jones believes the pilot would have been able to set the craft down but the wind, tail rotor stall and the topography made it just too hard to handle.

After the blades made contact with the ground the craft spun around and fell over on its side, according to Jones. Fortunately, no one was injured in the crash.

Robertson County EMS, the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency and North Robertson Fire & rescue all responded to the call.

Shortly after the crash, several very large military helicopters coincidentally flew over the site. You may have seen them around Robertson County, they are in the area conducting training exercises.
