Peggy GunnPeggy Joyce Dudley Gunn, 90, of Springfield, died Sunday February 4, 2018 at The Waters of Robertson. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday February 7th at 10:00 a.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Dr. Jerry Oakley officiating. Interment will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery with George R. Gunn, Robert Ralston, Clyde Dean, David Dean, Henry Dean, Brad Carneal, and Sam Hollingsworth serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry and Phyllis Hickerson, Lynn Antheil, Shirley Hinton, and Brigitte Johnson.

Mrs. Gunn was born January 23, 1928 in Columbus, GA to the late George B. and Jimmi Lou Johnson Dudley. She was a homemaker and business partner with her husband in Gunn’s Animal Clinic. She was a Girl Scout troop leader for eight years, and was a member of Springfield Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Dr. Jack Anderson Gunn, by her brother: Lt. Col George F. Dudley, and by her niece: Debra Dudley. Mrs. Gunn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Joyce Ann and floral squareDavid M. George of Clearwater, FL, grandson: Daniel Morgan George of Clearwater, FL, nieces: Cindy Gunn Putnam of Manchester, Lovie Gilbert Raines of Germantown, Gayle Gilbert Alber of New Jersey, and Sandra Dudley of Virginia, nephews: George R. Gunn of Seymour and Randall George Dudley of Virginia.

Obituary for Freeman Allen Loafman

Freeman Allen LoafmanFreeman Allen Loafman, 81, of Greenbrier, died Saturday February 3, 2018 at NHC Healthcare in Springfield. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday February 7th at 12 noon in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Dr. Steve Freeman officiating. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Madison. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Loafman was born July 30, 1936 in Bowling Green, KY to the late Ed and Essie Loafman. He was a retired machine operator with Ford Motor and he was a Christian. He was a member of the former Greenbrier Lions Club. Mr. Loafman enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, raising kennel dogs, riding quarter horses, and buying, selling, and trading pocket knives.

Obituary for Bertha Lee Bell

Bertha Lee BellEarly in the morning on Saturday, February 3, 2018, God dispatched His angel to bring one of His special servants home. The angel visited the bedside of Mother Bertha Lee Bell and said, “Your Heavenly Father says it’s time for you to join Him, come and take your rest.”

Mother Bertha Lee Bell was born September 17, 1922 to John and Sally Turner in Sumner County, Tennessee. She was one of nine children.

She was educated in the Sumner County school system attending Oak Grove School. Working many years in both the public and private sectors, she retired from doing what she loved, private childcare. Loving, nurturing, and caring for her family were her greatest joys.

Mother Bell professed hope in Christ at an early age and united with Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she faithfully served in many capacities until her health failed.

Mama Bertha, as she was loving called by so many, was preceded in death by her husband, Phinist Bell; son, Ammon Thomas Brooks; and daughter Denise Williams.

She leaves to cherish loving memories daughters, Evelyn (Cleophus) Payne, Linda (Dr. A. Eugene) Collier, Angel (Melvin) Scharklet; daughter-in-law, Frankie Brooks; son-in-law Samson Williams; 14 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 23 great-great-grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and friends.

Laurie Donon “Don” Byrne, 70, of Springfield, died Saturday February 3, 2018 at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday February 8th at 11:00 a.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Tim Harris officiating. Interment will follow in Springfield Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Byrne was born December 21, 1947 in Cedar Hill to the late Thomas J. and Mary Harris Byrne. He was a retired Chemist and Chief Operator for the City of Springfield Waste Water and Sewer Department. He also served as a training officer for over thirty years with the Springfield Fire Department. Mr. Byrne was a member of the former Springfield Jaycee’s, a ham radio operator, and was of the Catholic faith.

Don ByrneIn addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-son: Emmitt Logan Keith, his step-daughter: April Lee Quick, and his siblings: Thomas, Jr., John Robert, William R., Paul, Mickey, and Jimmy Byrne, Agnes Abernathy and Betty Fisher. Mr. Byrne is survived by his wife of 41 years: Betty Walker Byrne of Springfield, sister and brother-in-law: Lynda and Bill Citro of Columbus, OH, mother-in-law: Gwen Walker of Joelton, grandchild: Rachel Narveaz, great grandchildren: Disafian and Emmylou Narveaz.

Michael Sanders WrightMichael Sanders Wright, 59, of Springfield, died Wednesday January 31, 2018 at North Crest Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Monday February 5th at 12 noon in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Pastor Ricky Summers officiating. Interment followed in Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Cedar Hill with nephews serving as pallbearers. The family received friends on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Michael was born August 12, 1958 in Robertson County. He professed Christ at an early age and was of the Baptist faith. He had worked at the former Elm Hurst Nursing Home in maintenance and he enjoyed driving trucks. He was preceded in death by his father: James Ellis, and by his brothers: James Wright and James L. Ellis.

She was a loving mother and grandmother; and was a warm, loving, and caring person to all who knew her. She was a Bridge Master, and loved bowling, gardening, swimming and outdoor activities. And, she loved to travel.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry S. Searles; and a son, Raymond Searles. She is survived by her sons, Stephen E. Searles and Ronald (Karen) Searles; and her granddaughter, Razi (Keith) Wilson.

Mr. Rodgers was born June 10, 1936 in Obion, TN to the late Fred and Ollie Jones Rodgers. He was the Director of Radiology at NorthCrest Medical Center and was of the Cumberland Presbyterian faith. Mr. Rodgers was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and member of #403 Rockwood TN Masonic Lodge.

He worked as an accounting consultant with True Temper before his retirement. He was an avid stamp collector, loved playing the lottery and to shop for groceries. He especially liked to score buy one get one free items at the grocery. He was a member of American Legion Post #206 from White House.

He also loved fishing and playing pool.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Shelly Watts, Burton Watts, Bernard Watts, Ernest Watts, Otto Watts, Hugo Watts, Billy Watts, Quentin Watts, Taylor Watts, and Sylvanus Watts; sisters, Bessie Drake, Mildred Overby, and Clara Drake.

She was born in Gainesboro, TN on May 19, 1925 to the late Charlie and Georgia Lee Hopkins Leslie. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth C. Swezea; son, Danny Swezea; sister Frances Kirby; brothers, Elbert Leslie, Alvis Leslie, Oliver Leslie and granddaughter, Angela Swezea.

She was employed by J.C. Penney’s and Shoney’s. She loved to talk, read books and work word puzzles. She was a giver who loved everyone and took care of her family. She was loved and adored by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephew and nieces. Many times she knew of the boyfriend or girlfriends before the parents knew.

Visitation was held at the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield on Sunday, February 4, 2018 from 4-8pm and again on Monday from 10-10:30am.

Mr. Harp was born September 13, 1926 in Franklin, KY to the late Clarence and Laura Mae Gray Harp. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, was a funeral assistant and handy man at Austin & Bell for many years and was a member of Springfield Baptist Church. He was kind and generous and loved his country music record collection. Mr. Harp also enjoyed canning tomatoes and picking blackberries.

In addition to his parents Mr. Harp is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Hutton Harp, his brother, Sam Harp and his daughter, Mary Lee Johnson.

He is survived by son Byron Gentry, GA; step-sons, George Baxter, Springfield, TN and Dale Baxter, Trenton, GA; daughter, Tammy Thompson, GA; step-daughters, Kathy Pace, and Teresa Pewett, both of Woodbury, TN, Charlene Huff, Madison, TN and Beth Shortsleeve, Cottontown, TN; brothers, Carl Gentry, Trenton, GA and Wesley Gentry, GA; sister, Becky Gentry, Trenton, GA; numerous grandchildren. There are no services or visitation planned for Mr. Gentry.

There are plans to bury his cremated remains in Georgia at a later date.

Obituary for Opal Axley

Opal AxleyOpal A. Axley, age 92, of Joelton, Tennessee, died Thursday, February 1, 2018, at Claiborne-Hughes Health Center.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 o’clock am, Monday, February 5, at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View with Bro. Craig Geesaman and Bro. Jose Efrain Pallares officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Erin, Tennessee at 3 o’clock pm with Brad Pallares, Trever Pallares, Eli Pallares, Hayden Roth, Will Axley, Melvin Spears and Judah Courtney serving as pallbearers.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Saturday, February 3, 4:00-8:00pm and again Monday 9:00am until the hour of service at 11:00am.
Mrs. Axley was born on November 15, 1925 in Erin, Tennessee to the late William Thomas and Elsie Lee Brooks Bailey. She was a homemaker and was a member of Metro Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, William Arthur Axley; great-granddaughter, Mina Courtney; sisters, Edna Powell and Florence floral squareSpears; and brother, Thomas Bailey.

Mrs. Axley is survived by sons, Johnny (Mary) Axley of Greenbrier and William “Billy” (Leesa) Axley of Portland; daughters, Gail Reece of Joelton and Gladys (Dean) Guinn of Ashland City and; five grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren and; two great-great-grandchildren.

Barbara RushingBarbara Jean Gregory Rushing, age 65, of Springfield, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at her home. A graveside Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 1pm in the Orlinda Cemetery with Brother David Jicka and Brother Joe Rushing officiating. Scattering of Ms. Rushing’s cremains will follow. There will be no visitation prior to the graveside Memorial Service.

Ms. Rushing was born August 11, 1952 in Orlinda to the late Edward and Adabelle Dixon Gregory. She worked as a sitter.

Ms. Rushing is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Annie and Dewey Newberry of Springfield; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Ann GreenAnn Hill Green, age 80, of Cedar Hill, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at The Waters of Robertson. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 2pm in the chapel of the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Brother Paul Gardner officiating. Burial followed in the Bellwood Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Visitation was held at the funeral home on Saturday from 12 Noon until the hour of service at 2pm.

Mrs. Green was born July 14, 1937 in Louisville, KY to the late Fred Hill and Versie Spurlock Hill Slusher. She was a self-employed house keeper.

Mrs. Green is survived by her son, Alan (Karen) Green of White House; nieces, Pam Stack and Marcia Carlisle; grandchildren, Allison (Cory) Baker and Andrew Green; and great-grandchild, Collyn Caroline Baker.
