A tribute below was written by Jim Myers, Food Columnist with the Tennessean:
Longtime Nashville chef Brian Uhl, who bridged the old worlds of continental-style fine dining with new eclecticism died Monday night, his wife Cindy Uhl confirmed. He was 51.

Most recently, Uhl served as restaurateur Randy Rayburn’s culinary right hand as executive chef at Midtown Cafe as well as executive chef and partner at Cabana. Previous to that, he worked at the helm of Rayburn’s famed Sunset Grill from 2000 until 2005 when they opened Cabana together with Craig Clifft.

“Our Cabana and Midtown families are deeply saddened by the passing for our friend, Brian. His passion for his craft and excellent mentorship of young chefs inspired so many of us here and throughout the Nashville culinary community. Our hearts are heavy and our prayers are with his family as we mourn this great loss,” said Clifft through a released statement.

During Uhl’s tenure as chef de cuisine at the legendary Wild Boar, he became the first Nashville chef invited to cook at the James Beard House in New York, back when invitations were highly coveted and hard to come by.

He employed his knowledge of wild game and the framework of European technique he learned from such notable chefs Sigi Eisenberg, Thomas Keller, Jean-Louis Palladin and Boris Keller, and pulled them in the modern age of cooking. In Nashville, he also cooked at F. Scott’s, the Opryland and Stouffer Hotels.
Over the years Uhl’s work has been featured in the pages Bon Appétit, The New York Times, GQ as well as USA Today. He was also a gracious and popular ambassador for floral squareNashville and the Tennessee Titans during the years he represented the team at the Taste of the NFL leading up to the Super Bowl.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Brian Uhl Culinary Scholarship at Nashville State Community College, which was established earlier this year to honor his contributions the culinary community.
