Obituary for Freeman Crawford

Freeman CrawfordOttis Freeman Crawford, 93, of Springfield, passed away Saturday December 1, 2018. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday December 6th at 11:00 a.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Pastor Marvin Ralph, Pastor Ricky Morris, and Brother David Crawford officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Sharon Cemetery with Billy Crawford, Joshua Crawford, Cody Crawford, Lim Chol, Buddy Haggerman, and Adam Clouse serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Crawford and Paul Bracey. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Crawford was born August 11, 1925 in Robertson County to the late Eddy Howard and Pearlie Lee Ledbetter Crawford. He was a retired Pressman from McQuiddy Printing and was a member of Red River Assembly of God Church. After his retirement, Mr. Crawford then worked for Payne Brothers in Springfield. He loved antiques, farming, cutting wood, drinking coffee, and driving all over Robertson County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives: Jean Marie Crawford and Charlotte Marie Holliaday Crawford, his grandson: Steven Crawford, and his siblings: Pierce Warner Crawford, Virginia Lee Atkisson, Cleo Bloodworth, Ophia Mae Brown, and Howard Crawford.

Mr. Crawford is survived by his sons: Freeman Stephen (Peggy) Crawford of Nashville, Eddie Howard Crawford of Grand Rapids, MI, David Keith (DeAnna) floral squareCrawford of Greenbrier, brother: Wayne Crawford of Louisville, KY, sister: Juanita McClintock of Old Hickory, grandchildren: Billy Crawford, Joshua Crawford, Danielle Chol, Cody Crawford.

Jackie Lynn "Gaga" BrophyJackie Lynn “Gaga” Brophy, age 64 of Adams, died Friday, November 30, 2018 at her home. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at 3:00 PM in the Oakhurst Chapel of Robertson County Funeral Home. The family received friends Tuesday from 12 noon until the hour of service. Following the service her remains were cremated.

Mrs. Brophy was born September 10, 1954 in Florala, AL to Paul Harris Strange and the late Opal Irene Davis Strange. She was a member of Red River Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She enjoyed traveling and just riding around in her car as well as yard sales, camping, and boating. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her sister, Opal Elaine Douglas, and a brother, William Strange.

floral squareShe is survived by her husband, Robert Brophy of Adams; father, Paul Strange of Adams; son, Chad Daniel Flanders and wife Serena of Choctaw Beach, FL; daughters, Daphne Flanders Burson and husband Steven of Mantachie, MS and Heather Brophy Nielsen and husband Joshua of Fremont, NE; brothers, Ronnie Strange of Adams and David Strange of Spring Hill, FL; sister, Susie Kennedy of Crestview, FL; and grandchildren, Cody Swenbeck, Jason Carpenter, Maghan Ray, Kasey Flanders, Abbigail Galloway, Lila Grace Burson, Lydia Burson, Jordan Lott, Trista Lott, Bryson Lott, Isaiah Nielsen, and Nevaeh Nielsen.

Obituary for Jerry Lynn Sloan

Jerry Lynn SloanJerry Lynn Sloan, age 71 of Springfield, died Friday, November 30, 2018 at NorthCrest Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, December 3, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the Oakhurst Chapel of Robertson County Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Proctor and Rev. Dylan Proctor officiating. Burial followed in Williams Chapel Cemetery with Rev. Joe Donald King officiating and John Pearson, Bennie Pearson, David Morgan, Reed West, Derek Proctor, Chaney Webber, Jordan Evitts, and Josh Odom serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Tony Ryan, Bubba Osaile, Kermit Pendleton, German Poteete, Johnny Wilhite, Brad Clubbs, Rudy Romo Liebengood, Steve Rodgers, Donald Buck, and Chad Evitts. The family received friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 until 8 PM and Monday from 9 AM until the hour of service.

Mr. Sloan was born September 29, 1947 in Robertson County to the late Junior Ross Sloan and the late Patricia Ann Black Sloan. He was a member of Williams Chapel Baptist Church and was a veteran of the United States Navy. He enjoyed hunting and bowling. He loved his children and grandchildren and just enjoyed life in general, especially when riding his motorcycle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Gayle Poole.

He is survived by his wife, Beth Pearson Sloan of Springfield; son, Michael Dean Evitts of Springfield; daughters, Kristy Lea (Mike) Proctor of Southside, Lori Lynn West (David Morgan) of Springfield, Maranda Nicole (Chaney) Webber of floral squareSpringfield, and Nicole Elizabeth Sloan of Springfield; sister, Judy (Gene) Hulsey of Auburn, KY; grandchildren, Derek (Christina) Proctor, Rev. J. Dylan Proctor, Chad Evitts, Jordan Evitts, Katie West (Josh) Odom, Reed West (Daniele Bagby), Molly Beth Minnicks, Kayden Bentlee Webber, and Madelyn Felicity Nicole Webber; and great grandchildren, Presley Jo Odom, Kendall Jane Odom, and Addison Irene West.

George Albert JonesGeorge Albert Jones, age 81 of Springfield, passed away Monday, December 03, 2018 at NorthCrest Medical Center.

A graveside service will be held at 12 pm on Friday, December 7, 2018 at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Chad Phelan officiating.

He was born in Nashville, TN on June 30, 1937 to the late Walter Benjamin Jones, Sr. and the late Georgia Reeves Jones. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nora Faye Jones; sons, Robert Castell, Jerry Castell and a brother, Walter Benjamin Jones, Jr.

George was a graduate of Goodlettsville High school and was retired from Ford Glass Plant with 38 years of service. He also served in the US Air Force, was a longtime member and former deacon at Ebenezer Baptist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason.

The family received friends from 2pm to 8pm on Wednesday, Dec. 5th and again from 11am to 1pm on Thursday, Dec. 6th at Austin & Bell Funeral Home Greenbrier. The funeral service will follow at 1pm at the funeral home with Bro. Jerry Carmichael officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Cemetery.

Jimmy was born May 22, 1939 in Greenbrier to the late Jack Martin and Novella Howard Slate. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Browning. He was a Plumber-pipe fitter with Rock City Mechanical, a member off Hillcrest Church of Christ and was a veteran of the US Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Jones Slate; sons, Jeremy Mark (Rhonda) Slate of Greenbrier, Joe Howard (Kathy) Slate of Springfield; brother, Carl (Shirley) Slate of Greenbrier; sister, Patsy Nevels of Greenbrier; grandchildren, James (MacKenna) Slate, Aaron (Savannah) Slate, Nicole (James) Mixon, Ethan Slate; great-floral squaregrandchildren, McKinley Slate and Mattie Slate.

Pallbearers will be James Slate, Aaron Slate, Ethan Slate, Brandon Jones, Brian Jones and James Mixon.

Obituary for Barbara Crain

Barbara CrainBarbara Crain, age 81, passed away in the company of her family on Friday, Nov. 30, at her home in Greenbrier, TN.

Visitation was held Monday, Dec. 3, from 3 – 8pm, and Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 10am – 12pm. at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Greenbrier, TN. The funeral followed at 12pm at the funeral home. She was laid to rest at Greenbrier Cemetery.

Barbara was born June 17, 1937 in Springfield, TN and is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Burgess Fisher, her parents, Lillian “Mammy” and Clyde “Pappy” Crain, brother, Samuel Crain, sister, Charlotte Dunnivant, and grandson, Michael Burgess McCool.

A teacher and librarian for over forty years, Barbara taught at several Robertson County schools throughout her career including Whitehouse, Westside, and Greenbrier Middle School. In retirement, she volunteered her time at the Greenbrier Historical Society Library, where she was a charter member, and she held various positions in multiple organizations, including the Robertson County Retired Teachers Association, where she was the Past President. Barbara was an active member of Greenbrier First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and held numerous offices within the church. She kept in contact with many of her former students, following their accomplishments and serving as a sounding board whenever needed. A world traveler, an avid reader, and a loving family woman, Barbara will be dearly missed for her guidance and wisdom.

She is survived by her daughters, Lee Ann Fisher, Clarksville, TN, and Missy (Chris) Newsom, Smyrna, TN, her brother, Robert (Diane) Crain, her sister, Carolyn Haynes, both of Greenbrier, TN, her grandchildren, Melody McCool Street and William Burgess Fisher, her great-grandchildren, Lillian and Tanner Street, and numerous nieces and nephews.

floral squareThe Pallbearers will be Will Fisher, Robbie McAlister, Greg Crain, Steven Dunnivant, Bill Crain, Eric Opron, Gary Heflin, and Mark Bixler. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tanner Street and the Greenbrier High School Class of 1954.

She was of the Lutheran faith and had attended Memorial Lutheran Church in East Nashville when she was able.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Horst Jurgeluks; sister, Erna Neumann; brother-in-laws, Bernd Neumann and Fritz Hausser. She is survived by her sons, Emil Jurgeluks, Nashville, TN and Earl Timothy (Pam) Jurgeluks, Hendersonville, TN; daughter, Trudy (Billy) Jackson, White House, TN; brother, floral squareHerman Heim, Germany; sister Hedi Hausser, Germany; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

Leon was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. Retired from Ingram Materials, he was a member of First United Methodist Church and enjoyed working in the yard.
