Joelton Teen Dies, Another Hospitalized: Police Suspect Morphine/Gatorade Mix

JOELTON TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – The Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating an incident involving two teens (a male and a female) that officials believe may have ingested a mixture of liquid morphine and Gatorade, according to Cheatham County Sheriff Mike Breedlove.

Though the investigation is still ongoing, Sheriff Breedlove told Smokey Barn News, “We had a teen that died as a result of what appears to be morphine mixed with Gatorade.”

The incident, which occurred Friday morning, sent both teens to local hospitals. The boy, identified by the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office as, Jacob Rigsby, 17, of Joelton, a junior at Sycamore High School, did not survive. Officials say Rigsby died on Saturday evening.

Though the female, not identified, did not present symptoms, she was transported as a precautionary measure, according to Chief P. J. Duncan with the Pleasant View Fire Department.  Whether she had ingested the mixture was not immediately clear.

Investigators say that Rigsby stayed over night at a friend’s house on Oakwood Road Thursday night. Police believe Rigsby may have consumed the mixture some time Thursday evening and by Friday morning a friend called 911 because he would not wake up.

According to Chief Duncan, his team responded to a possible overdose call on Oakwood Road in Joelton Friday. “When we arrived one of the patients was unresponsive and CPR was performed on him.” In route to the hospital medics were able to reestablish a pulse, Duncan said.

As far as the source of the drug, Sheriff Breedlove said his detectives are “knee deep in the investigation.” – “We have two detectives working on it right now, it’s just too early. We’re going after video and other evidence to try and determine the source of the morphine but at the moment we just don’t know.”

Detectives won’t know for sure what caused the Rigsby’s death until autopsy and toxicology reports are completed which could take weeks.

Police are concerned about any remaining morphine that may still be out there. They would like to pull it off the streets before someone else gets hurt.

Anyone with information should call the Cheatham County Criminal Investigation Division at 615-792-2021.
