Large Fire Destroys Barn And 8 Acres Of Tobacco Product

CROSS PLAINS TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A large tobacco barn owned by the Chowning family is a total loss after a Monday afternoon fire tore through the structure.

The barn is located on Owens Chapel Rd near Cross Plains Rd. MAP The first call came into 911 just before 6 pm.

The barn itself and a connecting stripping room are a total loss, however, firefighters were able to stop the spread of the fire to adjacent structures. One trailer did suffer some melting to its outer facade but was otherwise intact.

According to Cross Plains Fire Chief Tommy Jackson, the barn was in the process of firing tobacco but a definitive cause of the fire was not understood. Jackson added that it may be difficult to determine an exact cause. No injuries were reported.

Eight acres of tobacco were lost in the fire, Jackson added.

For farmers, smoke firing tobacco carries risks to both structures and product. It’s something every tobacco farmer will face in the firing season.

Cross Plains Fire, Orlinda Fire, The White House Community Volunteer Fire Department and Robertson County EMS all responded to the fire.

If more information becomes available regarding a cause of the fire we will bring it to you.
