Net Neutrality Dies: A Letter To The Editor

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Yesterday the Federal Communications Commission voted 3 to 2 to repeal Net-Neutrality. Theoretically, Net Neutrality was supposed to even the playing field for consumers, regardless of how much they pay or where they live.

Wikipedia says, “Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers must treat all data on the Internet the same, and not discriminate or charge differently by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication. For instance, under these principles, internet service providers are unable to intentionally block, slow down or charge money for specific websites and online content.”

Local computer expert, William White, of Springfield, offered the following perspective of Net neutrality in a letter to the editor.

The internet is dead, or so says the left and the MSM, and some uninformed folks. Last night the FCC killed Net Neutrality by a vote of 3 to 2. Win for America! What they fail to admit is Net Neutrality was never fully implemented.

The internet before 2015 was working just as it always had and it was free from taxes and regulation. Something that has bugged the lefties from the beginning. They want to regulate and control everything, the internet is no exception.

The MSM are crying the internet providers will now be free to charge for faster speed and throttle connections. That is called a free market. The providers have always had that ability it is nothing new.

Who spent the billions to develop the infrastructure, not the government, but private companies, all the miles of wire and cable and fiber were installed and maintained and paid for by private companies. Why would they do that, because of the potential to make money? Why does the government want to control that because of the potential to regulate and tax, Net Neutrality was the first step.

Net Neutrality was socialism at it’s finest, everybody was going to get the same speed connection, a liberal pipe dream. That is not possible without spending billions to upgrade the entire system. Something that would be left to private companies again but this time for very little reward.

Someone in a major city with fiber and getting Gig speed should not be punished (which they are paying a premium to get), just because cousin Bob chooses to live in a rural area where that is not possible and he can only get 1.5 MBPS. Because the currently installed hardware and cabling will not support anything faster. News flash Cousin Bob is not paying what someone getting Gig speed is paying not by a lot. So what is the answer, SLOW everybody down to 1.5MPBS so cousin Bob is not slighted somehow. But this is only in the mind of the left and the MSM and a few uninformed folks.

Yes, you can cite several problems with these private companies, many because of their rapid growth, a few because of not caring about the customers but for the most part, they are delivering a good usable product.

I have been in the industry for 35 years, when I worked on my first computer it was an IBM 8086 and the cost was a couple of thousand dollars. Now something light years ahead of that is a few hundred dollars. Why? Capitalism and free markets. In the meantime a new pickup truck was in the neighborhood of $3,000.00 loaded with all the goodies, now a comparable pickup is $60,000 why capitalism sure, but government interference and regulation have added thousands to my $3000.00 pickup. I know there are other things that figure into that price increase but it is just one example.

When I started those 35 years ago people said internet? what is that? Now people say “oh you don’t have the internet how can you live like that”. People were using 64K modems that sounded like a Daffy Duck cartoon when connecting, to now Gig speed, you got a CD in the mail for AOL and paid monthly for a barely usable service, to now digital downloads at light speed. I’ve seen it develop from basically nothing to a multi billion-user platform. Something that has changed our lives in many positive ways (yes some negative also, but I think the good far outweighs the bad). Oh and AOL what is that is that still a thing.

Socialism says everybody gets the same thing, no one is allowed to succeed no one is allowed to have anything better, faster or shinier.

In a free market, the internet has grown to a huge deal, that same free market will regular itself, it always has and it always will. IF the government will leave it alone. People will go the supplier with the best service, and the best speed. And the companies who do not supply that will weed themselves out, or correct the problem, maybe not tomorrow but they will. Remember AOL.
