One Critical After Car/Train Collision In Greenbrier

GREENBRIER TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – An octogenarian has been hospitalized in critical condition after a train-vehicle collision Tuesday.
According to Sargent Curtis Scott with the Greenbrier Police Department, the collision occurred around 10:13 am at the Main St crossing in Greenbrier. MAP
The train struck the back portion of the passenger’s side of the vehicle which pushed the vehicle off the tracks. The vehicle came to rest, on its wheels, about 30 feet from the tracks, Sargent Scott said.
Sargent Scott estimated that the train was traveling about 25 miles an hour at impact, slow enough that the train was able to stop very quickly after the crash.
The driver, in his 80’s, now identified as Orville Byram, out of Clarksville, was lucid and talking after the crash, officials said, but he did sustain serious injuries. He was transported to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville in critical condition.
Greenbrier officials had the gentleman transported, scene cleared, car towed and the train back in service in record time, about one hour.
The Greenbrier Fire Department, Greenbrier Police, the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency and Robertson County EMS as well as Drakes Towing all worked quickly to clear the scene.
Train VS vehicle crashes are common in that stretch of track in Greenbrier, enough so that the city has begun efforts to improve several of the crossings. Last year Greenbrier City Officials met with TDOT and CSX representatives to find ways to improve safety at the crossing.
