The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

CSX train officials called in the incident at 2:30AM Wednesday morning and they are now working with the sheriff’s office to learn why the person was on the tracks.

According to Sumner County Sheriff Sonny Weatherford, the man has been identified as Jonathan Jones, 31, who lived on Poplar St in Portland.

Chief Weatherford told Smokey Barn News that the CSX Train engineer reported that as they approached the intersection the man “jumped out into the middle of the tracks right as they were pulling up to that area, and they were not able to stop.”

Chief Weatherford said they are still investigating the possibility that Jones’ actions were deliberate. The train was moving at about 20 miles an hour, Weatherford said.

Smokey Barn News would like to convey our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Jones as they face unimaginable grief.
