Police: Jeep Hit By Train Was Driving On The Tracks
ADAMS TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A Robertson County woman is lucky to be alive after her vehicle collided with a train Monday evening.
The accident occurred in Adams near Hwy 41 between Bagby Rd and the Red River.(Location of crash)
According to officials, the driver, in a late model Jeep Wrangler who lived near by, became confused and turned onto the rail-road tracks. Officials say the Jeep went about about a 1/4 mile straddling the tracks before being struck by the train.
Officials tell Smokey Barn News that the train was moving slowly, about 25 miles per hour when the conductor spotted the vehicle on the tracks and hit the brakes. By the time the train and the Jeep collided the train was down to about 10 or 15 miles an hour and the driver was not injured.
The impact pushed the vehicle off the tracks. One report indicated that the driver was not inside the vehicle when the train collided with the Jeep. Officials said that if the driver had not stopped, she could have ended up in the Red River.
The accident occurred around 8:30pm Monday evening. After the crash, the vehicle landed several hundred feet down the tracks which made access by standard tow vehicles problematic. That’s when a helpful neighbor stepped in with a tractor and brought the vehicle up to the roadway. It was after 11:00pm before the scene processed and the vehicle removed from the tracks.
According to the THP the driver was detained under suspicion of DUI and transported to a local hospital for a blood draw.
The Adams Fire Department, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office, the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency and Robertson County EMS all responded to the scene.
