In Springfield News
(Springfield, TN) NorthCrest Foundation Volunteers Deliver School Supplies To Springfield’s CrestView Elementary.
Peggy Rowland (left), and Marcia Nelson (right) represented the NorthCrest Volunteers in delivering school supplies to CrestView Elementary this morning. This is the Auxiliary’s chosen 3rd Quarter giving drive every year. Members of the Student Council helped carry the items in while school administration and members of the Robertson County School Board cheered!
Springfield Honored With Custom Board Game
Released this month and only for sale at Walmart, it’s called (as you can see in the photo) Springfield-Opoly and it’s made by a company in Ohio called Late for the Sky Production Co. In a conversation with Smokey Barn News, the firm said the game is designed to showcase a community. Open up the game and you’ll see familiar landmarks like restaurants, city buildings, and parks.
The firm told Smokey Barn News that they have “no affiliation with Hasbro,” the makers of Monopoly, but the game is similar. The 1924 patent expired in 1941 for “Monopoly.” That apparently opened the door for companies to make similar games.
Why Springfield? Late for the Sky said they look for cities that have shown a love for their community, a decision made by the city’s digital footprint and some market research. They have a team of about eight that do nothing but research communities.

Free Remote Medical/Dental Clinic Visits Springfield
SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – On Aug. 17th the Robertson County Baptist Association offered a free medical/dental and vision clinic.
The clinic was held at the Center Springfield on Saturday. It was a “No I.D. required open to the public” event. In addition to medical treatment, each patient received a New Testament Bible.

Springfield’s Wins $25k Grant For Dog Park Improvements (VIDEO)
Recently the Boyd Foundation announced 30 new Dog Park Dash winners across Tennessee. Springfield was one of just 30 cities to be awarded a $25,000 grant for improvements and expansions like an obstacle course and walking trail. Smokey Barn News was there on Wednesday when the check was presented to the city.
The Tennessee Dog Park Dash, funded by the Boyd Foundation, is dedicated to building or enhancing dog parks across the state. Established in 2018, this program is helping to make Tennessee the most pet-friendly state in America alongside other major efforts from brands such as Radio Systems Corporation, parent company of PetSafe (R). Through the Dog Park Dash, more than one hundred communities across the state of Tennessee will benefit from dog parks.

Payne Chevrolet: A Brief Look At Over 90 Years In Robertson County
SPRINGFIELD/ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Payne Chevrolet has been a staple in Springfield, Tennessee since 1926, enduring the Great Depression and thriving throughout the years in three different locations in Robertson County. Regardless of their location, the care and support they feedback into the community have been the same since their beginning. “Our first location was established in 1926 in downtown Springfield, TN on Main Street,” said Alex Payne, and great-grandson of Byram Payne who is currently acting as the firm’s Digital Marketing Manager. “This is where the current playground/parking lot is for Springfield Baptist Church. The lot was a very tiny space, so we were only there for a few years until 1928.”
“Once a little expansion was necessary, our next location was on Locust Street, where the current Robertson County Senior Center is located. The business expanded to two different buildings, one for service and one for sales showroom and office spaces, to increase productivity. Despite the efficiency between the two buildings, the space maxed out around having 30 vehicles available at any time. So as a result of increased business, the need arose yet again for an even bigger area. So in 1969 we built a new building with more lot space and moved into our current and final location at 2807 Memorial Blvd. in Springfield, TN.
“Payne Chevrolet was started by Mr. Byram Payne in January of 1926. With some help from his brother Van, the two managed the business together for a few years until Byram eventually bought him out completely. Byram made it a family business and brought in his two sons to help out: Don and Bobby Payne. He was succeeded by his two sons and they managed the dealership for a number of years until Don’s sons took over.
“Currently, we are in our THIRD generation of family ownership with Jeff and David Payne at the helm. They have been co-owners and dealers since 1977 and 1985, respectively, and are continuing the family legacy. If you have relatives from Springfield, or in the neighboring towns surrounding it, you have heard about the quality care from Payne Chevrolet. Back in late June, our very own Bill Cody with WSM was broadcasting live at the ‘Cross Plains Trash and Treasures’! We recognized him for his 25 years with WSM radio at that time! We announced that I, as his TN State Rep, on behalf of all the members of the TN House of Representatives, was presenting him a Proclamation honoring these 25 glorious years at WSM! Well, to be honest about it, the written Proclamation was not quite ready at that time! You know how government can be, and because we were on the radio, we ‘bluffed’ the Proclamation Presentation! And yes, we did it well! More fun was had than if it had been presented as we had intended! Since that day, a bit of time has passed and it has taken some work to get this group together! But, thanks to Mrs. Paula Carr, she was able to work on it and schedule a date that Bill, Mayor Barry, me and herself could be together! And, what a delightful time we had sharing stories … big time stories! Now, I am pleased to announce, our famous son of Cross Plains, and the legendary WSM Opry announcer Bill Cody has been presented the ‘real’ Proclamation honoring him for his 25 years at WSM! We thank you, sir! May God continue to Bless Bill Cody and all those that he touches through Country Talk and Music!

Mom says Gavin always gets by himself before a game and says a prayer. “I had a sister, (his aunt) pass away a few years ago. It hit Gavin very hard. He writes her name on the tape he wraps his wrists with prior to every game and wrestling match. Not only does he play for the passion of the game, but also knows his Aunt Val is watching down and gleaming with pride!”

Mom says Gavin had a close call with last year due to a throat abscess close to rupturing after being hit in a game last year. “A surgery and two hospitalizations later, he is playing his last year of Greenbrier football. He is definitely my miracle son!”

City of Millersville Police Dept. Increase Impaired-Driving Enforcement
The Millersville Police Department is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) for its “Booze It and Lose It” campaign from August 16 to September 2, surrounding the Labor Day holiday. This initiative coincides with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” mobilization to increase impaired-driving enforcement nationwide.
“There will be increased enforcement efforts in residential neighborhoods, as well as on Highway 31W and Bethel Road. It’s everyone’s responsibility to have a plan to get to and from their destination and drive safely and lawfully. The primary goal of traffic enforcement is to save lives.” said Sergeant Josh Barnes.
Increased state and national messaging about the dangers of drunk driving, coupled with increased sobriety checkpoints and high visibility enforcement, aim to drastically reduce the number of drunk-driving crashes, injuries, and fatalities this year.
The consequences of a single DUI conviction for a first-time offender in the state of Tennessee may include costly fines, court costs, legal fees, jail time, mandatory drug and alcohol treatment, and/or the installation of an ignition interlock device in his/her vehicle.
The THSO provides grant funding to support The Millersville Police Department and it’s increased enforcement efforts during this Booze It and Lose It campaign. For more information about the THSO, please visit www.tntrafficsafety.org.

Robertson County Schools & Department of Education Recognizes Five District Schools As Top Tier
On Wednesday, Aug. 15, the Tennessee Department of Education released their statewide evaluation information from the 2018-2019 school year. Robertson County Schools is proud to announce that 5 district schools were designated as Reward Schools, which is the highest level of distinction a school can earn in the state. These RCS schools are:
Coopertown Middle School
Crestview Elementary School
Krisle Elementary School
White House Heritage Elementary School
White House Heritage High School
Reward schools are those that are improving overall student academic achievement and student growth for all students and for student groups, and they are identified annually.
Additionally, the district earned the distinction of “Advancing,” a higher evaluation than last year’s, “Satisfactory,” rating.
TVAAS, or Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System, scores were also released. These scores show the growth that students made based on their peers across the state and range from 1 to 5. Robertson County has improved its Overall TVAAS Score from 1 to 3. For its Literacy, the district improved from 1 to 4, and the math improved from 2 to 3.
While the district did have one ATSI (Additional Target Support and Improvement) designated school, (Springfield High School) it is important to note that this school still scored a 5 in Literacy.
Dr. Chris Causey, Director of Schools commented on the district’s achievement saying, “It is important to celebrate when the data reflects the hard work of our students, teachers, and staff. Two years ago, we were, ‘In Need of Improvement.’ We are so proud of the growth we have seen over the last couple of years, of moving up one designation level per year. As we begin the new school-year, this progress gives us a great jump-start to becoming an Exemplary school system.”
Robertson County 4-H Shooting Sports – The Trap Team had a great- but HOT- practice today.
The Tennessee 4-H Shooting Sports Program is a volunteer-led program that teaches life skills through shooting sports. Youth learn safety and shooting techniques in the disciplines of shotgun, rifle, archery, muzzleloader, and hunting. This program is affiliated with National 4-H Shooting Sports. HWY 49 Weekend Construction Closures By TDOT (Dates)
ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – TDOT is providing a heads-up for commuters in the Coopertown area regarding weekend construction and road closers for Hwy 49.
On Friday, August 23 at 8 PM through Monday, August 26 at 5 AM there will be a weekend road closure on SR 49 at the Calebs Creek bridge; which is located north of Coopertown Middle School and south of Sandy Springs Rd on Hwy 49.

Robertson County’s United Way Delivers Schools Supplies To Family Resource Center and the Teachers Center
The United Way delivered a full-size U-Haul truck full of school supplies just a few weeks ago for Robertson County Schools students! Items were delivered to the Family Resource Center and the Teachers Center.
Thanks to the United Way, the district now has a stock of:

Spiral Notebooks
Crayons (boxes of 24)
Pencils
Backpacks
…and so much more.
United Way Community Impact Manager Asailio “Ace,” Timmermeier said the district was a natural choice since the change in county United Way leadership changed.
“United Way of Metropolitan Nashville transitioned to lead operations in Robertson County in January 2019,” said Timmermeier. “One of our focus areas is education, so it made perfect sense to stream supplies from our very successful Stuff the Bus Event in Davidson County to RCS to help get the school year off to a great start.”
In all, more than 700 backpacks full of school supplies were donated. In addition, the number of glue sticks, scissors, etc. totaled more than 25,000 pieces.
Timmermeier said the donation will be an annual event that she’s excited to be a part of.
“United Way is pleased to partner with Robertson County Schools to provide extra supplies to both students and teachers,: she said. “ Your teachers are tirelessly working to educate our future, the least we can do is facilitate the supplies necessary to prepare these children to learn.”
In acknowledging the sizeable donation, Director of Schools, Dr. Chris Causey said that in his opinion, there is no need for teachers or students to purchase any of these items for this school year.
He expressed gratitude on behalf of the entire district, saying, “This truly is the largest amount of school supplies we have ever seen at one time and are so blessed that the United Way is helping us out in this cause.”

34yr old Matthew Gilliam of neighboring Logan County, used a cut bait-skip jack, to pull this hog out of the water August 17th 2019.
“It was definitely a fight, that fish didn’t want to come up and took quite a bit of drag out every time it breached the surface.”
