TBI Investigating Coopertown Officer Involved Shooting
COOPERTOWN TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – According to officials in Coopertown, an Officer Involved Shooting involving a Coopertown Police Officer occurred Tuesday evening, May 28. There is an ongoing TBI investigation at this time.
On Tuesday, May 28, 2019, Metro Nashville Police initiated a pursuit which later involved their aviation unit. Around 5:30 pm, Coopertown Police Department received a call for mutual aid to intercept a fleeing suspect wanted for armed robbery and multiple home invasions out of Nashville.
Robertson County Central Dispatch advised the suspect was entering Coopertown on I-24 and Metro Nashville Police requested use of spike strips. Coopertown Police were prepared to deploy spike strips at exit 24 when dispatch advised the suspect exited the interstate at exit 19.
Once at exit 19, Coopertown Police again prepared to deploy spike strips. The suspect evaded and fled back to I-24 toward Clarksville. Coopertown Police requested mutual aid from Montgomery County and Clarksville Police.
The suspect continued to flee at a high rate of speed on I-24 and at one point crossed the median into the eastbound lanes traveling westbound against traffic. The suspect fled to exit 11 in Clarksville City limits.
When the Coopertown Officer attempted to stop the suspect, an officer-involved shooting occurred when the suspect drove his vehicle into the Coopertown patrol car, near where the officer was standing.
The Officer assessed the bystanders on the scene and ensured they were safe. The suspect was later apprehended in Clarksville.
Once the suspect was in custody, a firearm was recovered. Both the suspect and officer received medical attention.
This is an active and ongoing investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
According to Sargent Parker with the Coopertown Police Department, the officer sustained minor injuries to his leg. He was examined by EMS and later went for x rays to make sure everything was ok.

TBI Release UPDATE
At the request of 19th District Attorney General John Carney, TBI Agents continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting involving an officer with the Coopertown Police Department that occurred Tuesday night in Montgomery County.
Preliminary information indicates the incident began when an officer with the Coopertown Police Department spotted a vehicle that was the subject of a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) on I-24. Initial reports indicate the vehicle drove onto the interstate and into oncoming traffic. As the driver attempted to turn around and drive the correct direction, the officer positioned his vehicle next to stopped vehicles, blocking the lanes of travel. The officer got out of his car to approach the vehicle. Early information indicates the driver continued driving in the direction of the officer, and the officer fired at the vehicle as the car drove toward him. The vehicle struck the driver’s side door of the officer’s vehicle as it drove by. The car continued down the road until the driver abandoned it in Clarksville and fled on foot. The driver was ultimately located by Clarksville police officers. He was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for a non-fatal gunshot wound. He is currently being held in the Montgomery County Jail. The individual’s identity is not being released at this time due to his potential involvement in a current ongoing investigation. The officer was not injured.
TBI Agents continue to gather any and all relevant evidence and interviews in support of this ongoing investigation. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be passed along to the District Attorney General for his review and consideration.
The TBI does not identify the law enforcement officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective agencies.
