Tobacco Barn Fire Labeled Suspicious Under Investigation

COOPERTOWN TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Officials in Coopertown are calling a tobacco barn fire Monday night suspicious after learning that it was not a dark fired tobacco barn but a One-Sucker or Dark Air Cured tobacco barn.

Air Cured tobacco barns do not use a burning or smoke-related curing process and the barn did not appear to have electrical service.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Trey Nelms with the Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department, the barn is a total loss and was fully engulfed when his team arrived.

The barn is located on Ewell Elliott Rd near Ott Wilson Rd in Coopertown. The fire was called in just before 9:30 pm Monday evening. MAP

Neighbor and former volunteer firefighter Bob Fletcher told Smokey Barn News that the barn contained about an acre of tobacco and given that the barn was using an air cured process it does seem suspicious that it ignited.

Smokey Barn News will be reaching out to officials as they make their way through the investigation. As information becomes available we will bring it to you.

The Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department, Robertson County EMS and the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene.
