Two Semis Wreck At Same Intersection Just Hours Apart

STORY UPDATED

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Two tractor trailers crashed at the same intersection just hours apart Tuesday in Springfield, one colliding with a train. (Location of accidents)

The Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Springfield Police Department are in charge of investigating the accidents, the THP is handling the first and Springfield Police are investigating the second.  In the first accident, which occurred around 2PM, a tractor trailer was traveling East on Industrial Drive and while turning onto W. Hillcrest. Its load shifted during the turn causing the trailer to overturn spilling the heavy metal beams onto the roadway, according to the THP. A source told Smokey Barn News that the 5th wheel broke contributing to the loss of the load.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the driver of the tractor trailer in the first accident was charged with: Driving on Cancelled CDL, Due Care Violation, Unsafe Operation (Federal Reg), Registration Violation and Expired Insurance.

The second accident occurred just a few hours later (around 8PM) and involved a tractor trailer being struck by a train. According to Springfield Police investigators, the driver indicated that as he was approaching the tracks the rail-road crossing arm was up and no lights were flashing.

The driver told police that as he started to cross the tracks the lights came on and the arm came down. The driver said he immediately placed the truck into reverse to get out of the way of the train but it was already too close and struck the front of his truck, according to Springfield Police.

The CSX engineer and Conductor that were on the train told police that the train was not moving at full speed as Smokey Barn News predicted. The side steps of the train were damaged in the collision, according to police.

The two rigs were transporting the same cargo. They were transporting a large industrial scale that had been recently decommissioned and was being transported for recycling.

Fortunately, no one was injured in either accident.
