Tobacco Barn Lost To Fire Early Thursday

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) -A tobacco barn, though still standing, is being classified as a total loss after a fire that started around 4:15am Thursday.

The barn is located on Old Greenbrier Pike near Oakland Rd MAP and is owned by the University of Tennessee, Highland Rim AgResearch & Education Center.

Firefighters from Greenbrier, Springfield, Ridgetop and White House Volunteer all responded.

Old Greenbrier Pike at Oakland Rd was closed for about two hours while firefighters put out the fire.

The fire is not being labeled as suspicious, according to Greenbrier Fire Chief Kyle Hamill. “It was just one of those things that can happen with Tobacco Barns from time to time,” Hamill said.

One official estimated the loss of tobacco to be between 2 and 2.5 acres.

No injuries were reported and firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to an adjacent barn and woods.

While on his way to work this morning, James West snapped this photo of the barn as it was engulfed in flames.
