The 27th Annual Trash & TreasuresTM Community-Wide Yard Sale is Friday and Saturday, June 28-29, 20113, in Cross Plains, Tennessee, 6 a.m. till 4 p.m.(CT), or until all booths and vendors decide to retire for the day. For the small Robertson County town, one of the oldest (133 years) and most historic in Tennessee, the event has become a friends and family homecoming and is a picker’s paradise. It is always held the last Friday and Saturday of June.
Trash & TreasuresTM is an annual fundraiser for the Cross Plains Heritage Commission. The organization operates a museum and archives in “The Doctor’s House” on Highway 25, across from Terry’s Market. The event’s registration booth fees of $25 per space have helped restore the house and keep the museum open, free of charge. The house was the former home of local physician, Dr. James Covington, and businessman, Burgess Thomas, who started the renowned Thomas Drugs. The drugstore is the heartbeat of the community and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. It features a turn-of-the-century working soda fountain and is owned and operated by pharmacist Dan Green and wife, Debbie.
Trash & TreasuresTM began with several residents deciding to have a yard sale on the same weekend, and town historian, Ruby Covington and her late husband, Jay Covington, decided to organize and advertise. About ten years ago, the once active Cross Plains Merchants Association decided to name the event and market it to a wider audience. Today, people come from many counties, states, and as far away as Canada, Texas, and Florida, to visit relatives and look for treasures among the cast-off goods. Fishing rods, golf clubs, books of all kinds, Victorian antiques, pioneer cookware, hand-made and costume jewelry, and clothing for all ages are just some of the items for sale.
Cross Plains was founded by Thomas Kilgore, a contemporary of early white settlers, Kasper Mansker, the Bledsoe brothers, James Robertson, and John Donelson. Kilgore’s exploration in 1878 led more people to come to Robertson County from North Carolina, and the town has thrived ever since.
New this year, are concrete sidewalks on the north side of Highway 25 in the downtown business and residential districts. There’s always a new business or two open and ready with antiques and goodies. Among then, The Historic Corner House Antiques is open on the corner of East Robertson Road and is filled to the brim with all sorts of glittering and time-worn treasures. Showcased on the front porch and lawn are “repurposed” architectural antiques and outdoor furniture made from old barn wood. During the two-day yard sale, the town’s restaurants, like True’s Barbeque, grocers like the Piggly Wiggly and Dollar General, and concessionaires along Main Street will sell a variety of food including funnel cakes, popsicles, lemonade, hot dogs, hamburgers, and barbecue. Residents and visitors will also appreciate that several area churches are giving away free bottles of water.

Payment and space assignments will be exchanged at “The Doctor’s House” museum on Thursday, June 27, 2013, fromNoon till 9:00 p.m. Registration is open again on Friday, June 28th at 5:00 a.m. During the event, free public parking is offered in the lot between Terry’s Market and the Dollar General.
