ANIMAL ALERT: Elk Release Underway Across Robertson County

ROBERTSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE (Smokey Barn News): In an effort to reduce wildfire risk tied to dry grass and brush, officials have initiated a large-scale elk release across 17 locations in the county.

According to officials, approximately 22,000 elk are being deployed to graze high-risk areas and reduce fuel for grass fires.

Residents may notice transport vehicles releasing elk throughout the day. Some roadways may be temporarily shut down in designated release areas while crews complete deployment.

To increase herd establishment success, wildlife teams are also using “rut stimulation” techniques to encourage early breeding activity. Residents may notice trained professionals wearing elk decoy suits and artificial antlers, simulating natural rut behavior such as tree rubbing and paired sparring, where two individuals in elk outfits engage in controlled, mock antler clashes. Officials say the goal is to trigger an early breeding cycle and accelerate herd propagation. These are people in specialized gear, not actual elk, and the public is advised not to be alarmed if encountered in wooded areas.

Officials are urging motorists to use caution and hunters to refrain from harvesting the animals.

“The elk are in place to handle overgrowth of grass and brush. We believe this will significantly reduce the risk of grass fires,” officials said.

Officials added the program is expected to show “immediate results.”

Some residents have already reported sightings near roadways and open fields. Powered by Springfield Auto “Integrity you can drive on!”

UPDATE:

At approximately 7:30pm last night, deputies received a call of an intoxicated male subject with a firearm who had been shooting recklessly off his back porch and then barricaded himself in his residence following a domestic altercation on Karas Way in Springfield, TN. Upon arrival, deputies confirmed no other individuals besides the subject, Christopher A Paredes, were in the residence. Deputies attempted to instruct Christopher to come out of the home; however, he refused. Due to the inherent risk to his neighbors, law enforcement, and himself, the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiations Unit, and the Drone Response Team were dispatched. The Negotiations team made numerous attempts to talk Christopher out of the home; however, he continued to refuse to comply. The Emergency Response Team then initiated tactical protocols and actions, which led to Christopher exiting the home and being taken into custody without further incident. He is being held at the Robertson County Detention Facility on the following charges.

Christopher Paredes of Springfield, TN – No Bond
Assault, Domestic Related
Possession of A Handgun While Under the Influence
Unlawful Carrying or Possession of a Weapon
Evading Arrest
Resisting Stop, Arrest
Disorderly Conduct
Reckless Endangerment, Misdemeanor

“I am proud of the precision with which this operation was carried out by our highly trained deputies. Their professionalism and bravery in protecting our community are once again duly noted and recognized. Thank you to the Robertson County EMA and Robertson County EMS for their response,” stated Sheriff Michael Van Dyke.
