Thomas Joseph Gilligan, III
August 25, 1955 ~ August 9, 2026
70 Years Old

Thomas Joseph Gilligan III, 70, of Springfield, TN, died at his home where he had lived for 15 years on Sunday August 9, 2026. Born August 25, 1955 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, he was the eldest son of the late Thomas Joseph Jr and Virginia Gilligan. He is survived by his wife Penny Gilligan, his children Laurie Gilligan and her husband Peter in Colorado, Christine Noland and her husband Steve in Montana, his grandchildren Liana, Adrian, Samuel, Daniel, and Deborah; his siblings Kathleen Salangsang and husband Rick, Patty Burroughs and husband Steve, and Matt Gilligan and wife Linda; his five bonus children of Penny’s family – Jennifer, Shellie, Lily, Kevin Jr., and Hannah; and nine additional grandchildren.

Tom graduated from St John’s Preparatory school in 1973 and attended college at Wentworth Institute of Technology. He studied machinery, then worked as an engineer with patented inventions and as a skilled machinist. From his first marriage, he had two children who he loved dearly. Tom married his soulmate Penny Gilligan in 2004. They shared twenty-two years of marriage in Tennessee, and celebrated their 20th anniversary in Oahu. Tom was a joyful, deeply caring man who prioritized family, the land, and adventure alike. He doted on his children and grandchildren, and took many cross-country road trips to visit family where he explored their state’s rivers, lakes, mountains, rocks, music, and communities. Tom loved gathering with neighborhood friends for big bonfires, and spoiling his dogs with the best bites of food and a seat or lap at the kitchen table. He was enthusiastic about his many hobbies, big gardens, and fresh-caught or homegrown cooking; he collected treasures like rocks, stamps, coins, and antiques; and he cherished traditions like oystering with his brother and cooking Polish holiday meals. He had a huge mischievous smile that got everyone else laughing and finding the wacky in the everyday.

He was an exuberantly creative artist, with a signature style of strong black lines carrying wavy colorful landscapes that shared his playful vision of the land and sentimental appreciation of moments in time, and he created sculptures from simple mixed materials that were striking and unique. He was an avid gardener, growing large vegetables for county fair contests and richly-composted gardens with wildly abundant tomatoes. Tom was often by the water, spending many early adult years in his boat on the Atlantic catching lobster and striped bass while summer-commuting to a beloved off-the-grid Massachusetts island between work weeks, and later, fishing where he lived in Tennessee. In retirement he spent peaceful time at Lincoln Lake with his wife where he became an expert at catching catfish the size of sea-monsters.

Tom Gilligan always had a good story, a community of friends, and big love for family. He was grounded in his faith throughout life, raised Catholic and later gathering with his community for bible study. With late-discovered cancer, he departed before his life list of adventures was completed, but in his last summer he planted surprise zinnias for his wife, a testament to Tom’s legacy of fun, growing gardens, caring for loved ones, and appreciating all the moments. He will be deeply missed. There will be a visitation on Wednesday August 12, 2026 at 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. followed by a service at 4 p.m., at Robertson County Funeral Home, in Springfield, Tennessee. Another celebration of life will be held at a later date in Massachusetts, where Tom grew up and will be laid to rest.

Services have been entrusted to the Robertson County Funeral Home.

George Thomas McPherson was born on September 6, 1929, in the front room of his grandparents’ house on a farm in Youngville, TN. His parents lived their faith, loved their family, worked diligently, and valued education.

Tommy learned leadership and responsibility as the oldest of four children on the family farm. He learned to appreciate and utilize available resources from scarcity. Tommy served his community on various boards and committees. He was active with the Springfield Kiwanis Club for many years. He was a faithful, active member of Barren Plains Baptist church. He was a choir member, Sunday school teacher, served on many committees, and as a deacon. For several years, he taught a Sunday school class at Morningside of Springfield. Tommy moved to Morningside in August of 2021.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren, traveling and camping, a good laugh, reading, a good conversation, time on a tractor, tending to the farm and talking to his cows. Tommy spent time encouraging others, was very kind and generous, was humble and was very quick to count his blessings. He taught the value of learning from mistakes, and the art and gift of forgiveness. First and foremost, he loved God.

Tommy entered his Heavenly home peacefully on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the age of 96, at Morningside of Springfield following family gathering, singing hymns and prayer.

Billy taught high school at his alma mater, Ardmore High School, for three years. He then taught at Goodlettsville High School and Middle School for the next 30 years, where he coached many teams in basketball, soccer, and track.

Billy & Betty completed construction of their home on Triangle Road in 1966, and raised their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren there. He loved the farm- he loved everything about it: the cows, the barns, the hay- and he spent his time, after retiring from school teaching in 1996, on the farm.
He had a green thumb and grew the most beautiful flowers all over his yard. He also grew a garden each year and loved to provided family & friends with most delicious tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, turnip greens, and more!

Billy was a member of Highland Chapel Baptist Church for over 50 years where he taught Sunday School, and served as a Deacon, and Church Treasurer. He was a man of strong faith and served his God well. He often shared the gospel of Christ with unbelievers that he met. He taught his Christian values to his children and grandchildren. He led by example because he lived what he taught.
Billy left a legacy of faith, strength, and love to be carried by his family into future generations. He lived life big- with a sense of humor that made everyone laugh. He loved his family, he loved the farm, and he will be missed by all.

In addition to his parents, and wife, Betty Woodson Hogan, Billy is preceded in death by his siblings Doris Ann Campbell, Jimmie Hogan, & Judy Stafford.

Survivors include son, Edwin Hogan (Marcia); daughters, Beth Stuart (Mike), and Ginny Runyan (Greg); brothers, Kenneth Hogan (Ruth), and Tony Hogan (Wanda); sister, Patsy Griffin; grandchildren, Landon Hogan (Lauren), Jackson Hogan (Ella), Josh Stuart (Rachel), Jesse Stuart (Ronie Lynn), Allison Hill (Justin), Heather Runyan, Grant Runyan (Trinity), and Kate Runyan; great-grandchildren, Woodson Hogan, Ella Kate Hogan, Sophie Stuart, Maddox Stuart, Jace Stuart, Peyton Stuart, Maverick Hill, and Adeline Hill.

Mr. Hogan’s family wishes to extend a special “Thank You” to Alive Hospice, Dr. Burne & the staff at Tennessee Oncology, and caregiver, Cindy Dungan.

If so desired, memorial contributions in Mr. Billy’s memory may be made to Highland Chapel Baptist Church, 7364 Highway 41A, Cedar Hill, TN 37032.
