100 Degrees In Robertson County: Simple Ways To Beat The Heat And Help Your AC

ROBERTSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Temperatures reached 100 degrees in Robertson County Sunday afternoon, and with the heat index even higher, air-conditioning systems across the county are working overtime.

The National Weather Service has Robertson County under an Extreme Heat Warning until 7 p.m. Sunday, followed by a Heat Advisory through 7 p.m. Monday. Heat-index values could reach 111 degrees.

The good news: some relief is on the way. Temperatures are expected to begin dropping Monday, with noticeably cooler conditions beginning Tuesday.

In the meantime, a few simple steps can reduce the amount of heat entering your home and help take some of the load off your air conditioner:

  • Check your AC filter. A dirty filter restricts airflow and makes the system work harder.
  • Close blinds and drapes, particularly on windows receiving direct sunlight.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights. Incandescent bulbs in particular produce considerable heat.
  • Avoid clothes dryers, ovens and other heat-producing appliances during the hottest part of the afternoon when possible.
  • Keep exterior doors and windows closed and minimize trips in and out.
  • Use ceiling and portable fans. Moving air can make a room feel more comfortable without requiring the thermostat to be lowered further.
  • If your air conditioner is already running continuously, turning the thermostat substantially lower will not make the house cool down faster.

Most importantly, check on elderly neighbors, relatives and anyone who may not have adequate air conditioning. Drink plenty of fluids, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, provide pets with plenty of fresh water and never leave children or animals inside a parked vehicle.
