Five Injured, Two Critically, In Head-On Crash Near Cross Plains
CROSS PLAINS, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Five people, including two children, were injured in a serious head-on collision Wednesday afternoon near Cross Plains, with two adults transported to a Nashville hospital in critical condition.
Robertson County EMS Medic 2 from Cross Plains and the Cross Plains Fire Department were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. to the 12000 block of Owens Chapel Road following an initial report of a two-vehicle crash involving two injured adults. MAP
Additional 911 callers soon reported that the crash was a serious head-on collision, prompting dispatchers to send a second ambulance.
Cross Plains Fire Chief Tommy Jackson arrived and established command, reporting that three adults and two children were involved in the crash. Two of the adults were found to be in critical condition.
Jackson requested two additional ambulances, bringing the total to four, and requested a medical helicopter.
An EMS paramedic supervisor also responded and deployed emergency blood products for one of the injured adults.
According to Robertson County EMS Director Brent Dyer, the nearest available medical helicopter had an estimated flight time of 28 minutes. Due to the extended wait, EMS crews transported all five patients by ground.
The two critically injured adults were transported under emergency conditions to TriStar Skyline Medical Center. The two children and their grandmother were transported to Vanderbilt, allowing the family to remain together while receiving treatment at the adult and children’s hospitals there.
Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers and Robertson County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted with traffic control and scene management. They also helped Cross Plains Fire Department personnel winch one of the damaged vehicles far enough off the roadway to allow ambulances carrying patients to pass.
