Greenbrier Barn A Total Loss After Fire Wednesday

A barn in Greenbrier is a total loss after a fire that broke out just after 5:00pm Tuesday afternoon. The 30 by 40 foot barn is located in the 5000 block of Betts Rd.
A neighbor told Smokey everything seemed fine until their dogs started making a racket and their goats started jumping around on the back porch. They looked out to see what all the fuss was about and saw a big ball of fire in their neighbors back yard. “The fire was starting to come into my yard, the neighbor said, the barn was very old, at least 50 years.”
The neighbor called 911 at 5:21PM according to dispatch. The barn was in very close proximity to a home but fire crews from Greenbrier, Ridgetop and White House Community Volunteer fire departments kept the fire from reaching the home.
Within a short time the fire had mad its way down a steep ravine or embankment to what looked like a creekbed and had jumped over and traveled some 50 feet up the other side. The plume of smoke from the fire was visible from as far away as Springfield.
You could tell from the burn marks on the ground that the fire was headed towards the adjacent home, so it was great work by our local firefighters keeping it contained. At this point, a cause of the fire is still under investigation but the barn did not seem to be centralized to the total area burned.
