THP to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint in Sumner County

SUMNER COUNTY, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) will conduct a “Sobriety Checkpoint” on State Highway 25 near Barry Lane in Sumner County during the week of August 16, 2024, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM. This initiative aims to combat impaired driving, a severe crime that claims over 16,000 lives and injures 305,000 individuals annually in the United States.

Troopers will assess drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, ensuring the safety of all motorists. The THP emphasizes that sobriety checkpoints are highly visible and effective in the fight against impaired driving.

While the Fourth Amendment protects citizens against unreasonable searches and seizures, sobriety checkpoints are permitted if advertised in advance. These announcements, along with Apps that display checkpoint locations, help maintain the balance between public safety and constitutional rights.

During a checkpoint, officers collect and run the driver’s name and ID for any warrants. Lack of a valid license may result in a citation. Additionally, if probable cause is determined, officers may search vehicles, potentially uncovering illegal substances or weapons.
