Local Karate Team Brings Home 17 National Medals
SUMNER/ROBERTSON COUNTIES, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A group of six dedicated young martial artists from Sumner and Robertson Counties have wrapped up a remarkable season that included three appearances on the national stage, earning an impressive 17 medals across the AAU Karate Nationals, the USA National Karate Federation (USANKF) Nationals, and the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Throughout the season, the team also traveled extensively across the regional circuit, competing and medaling in high-level events as far away as Texas, Ohio, Florida, and Atlanta, honing their skills and building momentum at every stop along the way.
The athletes, Allie Henry (20), Ben Henry (18), Lily Shivers (17), Madison Newberry (16), Brooklyn Newberry (13), and Gavin Newberry (13), competed as a close-knit group they affectionately dubbed the “Wado Warriors.” The nickname not only reflects the deep camaraderie among the six athletes but also gives a respectful nod to their shared martial arts background: Wado-Ryu, a traditional Japanese style of karate that emphasizes both technique and harmony.
Their combined medal count at national-level events this year includes:
* 🥇 3 Gold
* 🥈 7 Silver
* 🥉 7 Bronze
“The medals are incredible, but what’s even more inspiring is how much these kids have grown as athletes, teammates, and leaders,” said a parent of one of the Wado Warriors. “They’ve learned what it means to show up, support one another, and pursue excellence with humility.”
A Journey Fueled by Dedication
The Wado Warriors originally began their karate training at a dojo close to home, where their love for martial arts first took root. As their skills and aspirations evolved, they undertook a difficult, but ultimately essential, move to one of the finest traditional and sport karate dojos in the state of Tennessee, a school that is part of a respected international federation and provides world-class training, competition opportunities, and mentorship.
Despite the one-hour commute each way, 3–4 times per week, these athletes remained fully committed to their training. Their discipline and drive to grow pushed them to embrace new challenges, sharpen their skills, and develop as both martial artists and individuals. It’s a move that has clearly paid off, not only in terms of competitive success but also in the character and confidence they’ve built along the way.
A Community Effort
The team and their families attribute much of their success to the overwhelming support of the local community. Generous sponsors, friends, church families, and neighbors all played a part in helping offset the substantial travel and competition expenses… making it possible for these athletes to attend tournaments across the country and chase their national dreams.
“This wasn’t just a season, it was a journey we all took together,” one parent noted. “From small-town roots to multiple national stages, these kids carried their communities with them every step of the way.”
Looking Ahead
As this competitive season comes to a close, the Wado Warriors are taking a moment to celebrate, rest, and reflect, while already looking toward what lies ahead. With renewed passion, growing opportunities, and proven talent, their future is bright. With the opportunity to compete in international tournaments on the horizon, the team is focused, motivated, and preparing for the next stage of their journey.
For now, they’re back home, sharing smiles, memories, and a shared sense of accomplishment. And for those who supported them… their gratitude runs deep.
“Thank you for believing in us, lifting us up, and helping us chase big dreams,” said a team member. “This is just the beginning.”
