Portland Officer Resigns Following Domestic Assault Charge in Springfield

PORTLAND, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) A Portland police officer has resigned after being charged with domestic-related assault in Springfield.

The Springfield Police Department is leading the investigation and confirmed that 30-year-old John Wesley Lepter was arrested for an incident that occurred within their jurisdiction, but said it could not release further details because the case remains ongoing.

Lepter was taken into custody by the White House Police Department on behalf of Springfield Police and processed at the Robertson County Detention Facility in Springfield. His bond was set at $5,000. He was booked on January 30 and spent just over 12 hours in custody before bonding out at 3:03 p.m. the same day.

Following the arrest, the City of Portland issued the following statement from Police Chief Jason Arnold:

“On January 30, 2026, the City of Portland was notified that one of its officers, John Wesley Lepter, had been arrested and charged with Domestic Assault by the Springfield Police Department in Robertson County. Upon notification, Mr. Lepter was immediately placed on administrative leave. He has since resigned his employment with the City of Portland.”
