Portland Infant Killed in Fatal Dog Attack at Family Home
PORTLAND, TENNESSEE (Smoky Barn News) – A tragic incident claimed the life of an infant Monday morning when a family dog gained access to the home and attacked the child, according to Portland Police.
Officers were called to a residence in Portland around 7:00 a.m. on April 20, 2026, for a reported death involving an infant. Preliminary findings show the dog entered through a rear door and attacked the child, who later succumbed to the injuries sustained in the attack.
Upon arrival, officers found the dog still on scene and displaying aggressive behavior. For the safety of everyone present, responding officers euthanized the animal. Police say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Portland Police Department has classified the case as an active death investigation.
Chief Jason Arnold and the department extended their deepest condolences to the family, saying, “We also recognize the emotional impact such incidents have on first responders and appreciate their professionalism in handling this tragic situation.”
