Data Centers In Springfield? City Clarifies Agenda Item

SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A recent agenda item for the Springfield Municipal/Regional Planning Commission has sparked questions from residents about whether a data center could be coming to Springfield.

The item, listed on the June 4, 2026 Planning Commission agenda, reads: “Discuss and possibly take action on a Zoning Ordinance amendment pertaining to data related land uses.”

After residents raised concerns online, Smokey Barn News reached out to the City of Springfield for clarification.

According to the city, the agenda item is not tied to a proposed data center project. Instead, officials say the city currently does not have regulations specifically addressing data centers and other data-related land uses.

“The city does not have regulations pertaining to data centers, which means one could come very easily,” city officials told Smokey Barn News. “The discussion is to potentially adopt a set of regulations that would protect citizens.”

At this time, city officials indicate the agenda item is focused on establishing zoning regulations before any future proposals are submitted, rather than responding to a specific development request.

The Springfield Municipal/Regional Planning Commission is scheduled to discuss the item during its June 4 meeting. Residents wishing to comment on the proposal can contact the city or attend the meeting for additional information.
