SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Progress continues on the restoration of Springfield’s historic Capitol Theatre as crews recently installed the lower section of the theater’s iconic marquee.

Using large cranes and a great deal of precision, workers carefully lifted the massive sign section into place. The process required slow, deliberate movements as crane operators guided the marquee inch by inch into position before securing it to the building.

The installation marks another visible milestone in the ongoing restoration effort led by Springfield native Michael Crawley and MDI Construction. Crawley purchased the Capitol Theatre in late 2025 with plans to restore the landmark and return it to service as an entertainment venue while preserving its historic character.

While no official reopening date has been announced, the addition of the marquee is another sign that progress is steadily being made. According to the theater’s Facebook page, the newly installed lower section of the marquee is expected to be illuminated later this week. The theater’s return is expected to bring renewed activity to downtown Springfield. While the Capitol Theatre was once responsible for much of the foot traffic downtown, today’s downtown district offers visitors far more options than in years past. Once reopened, theatergoers will be able to enjoy a movie and then walk to one of several nearby restaurants, shops, and businesses, creating an experience that many believe will further strengthen downtown Springfield.

Smokey Barn News captured the entire marquee installation process on video. Because much of the lift involved extremely slow, precise movements, portions of the footage have been presented in time-lapse format, condensing hours of work into just a few minutes.
