Elderly Nursing Home Resident Seriously Injured After Fall Into Rock-Filled Ditch
SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – An octogenarian sustained serious injuries after falling into a roadside drainage ditch lined with large, jagged rocks Monday evening in Springfield.
According to Robertson County EMS Director Brent Dyer, Robertson County EMS was dispatched from Station along with the Springfield Fire Department and local law enforcement, the first call coming into 911 at 8:20 p.m.
Dyer said the man, who was a resident of The Waters of Springfield skilled nursing facility, had apparently left the facility either in a wheelchair or on foot before making his way down a long driveway and out onto the street. At some point, the elderly gentleman fell into the rock-filled drainage ditch along 5th Avenue East. How the gentleman managed to exit the facility, travel down the long driveway, and make his way to the roadway was not clear. There is no sidewalk in front of the facility.
The steep ditch, lined with large, jagged rocks, created a difficult rescue for first responders, who had to carefully position themselves while safely extricating the man and transferring him to an ambulance, Dyer said.
The man sustained serious injuries and was transported emergency-traffic to an area hospital. An update on his condition was not immediately available.
