Gas Station Employee Charged Following Kratom Investigation In Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – This will be an update as to why the new BP station on Hwy 41 near the Springfield/Robertson County airport was taped off and temporarily closed for a short time by law enforcement on Tuesday.  According to the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office, it was all part of a drug investigation into the alleged sale of Kratom and money laundering activities at a Springfield gas station.

Investigators with the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office were executing a search warrant at the station, located at 4960 Highway 41 North in Springfield.

During the execution of the search warrant, investigators reported locating and seizing numerous illegal Kratom products from the trunk of a vehicle belonging to Vamshidhar Reddy Donapati, 31, of Portland. Smokey’s cameras were rolling when Donapati was taken into custody. Investigators allege the investigation revealed Donapati was selling Kratom from the trunk of his vehicle in the parking lot in an effort to keep the products from being visible inside the store.

Donapati, who is an employee of the gas station, was arrested and charged with Possession of Kratom with Intent to Sell, a Class C felony under Tennessee law.

The Sheriff’s Office says additional felony charges related to the sale and delivery of Kratom, as well as money laundering, are expected to be presented to a Robertson County Grand Jury.

Donapati is currently being held at the Robertson County Detention Facility on a $50,000 bond. As of 2 pm Wednesday, Donapati remained behind bars.

“I am proud of the outstanding work our Sheriff’s Office team continues to do to keep our county safe. Illegal drugs have no place in our community, and we will continue to hold those who choose to break the law accountable. Safety is our number one priority,” said Robertson County Sheriff Michael Van Dyke.

As with all criminal charges, the allegations against Donapati are accusations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

What is Kratom?
Kratom is a plant native to Southeast Asia whose leaves contain compounds that can produce stimulant-like effects at lower doses and opioid-like effects at higher doses. While kratom remains legal in some states, Tennessee law classifies its active ingredients as controlled substances, making its sale and possession generally illegal in the state.
