Greenbrier Schools Go on Lockdown Due to Swatting Incident
GREENBRIER, TENNESSEE (Smokey Barn News) – We have an update for you on the precautionary lockdowns at schools in Greenbrier this morning. Greenbrier Elementary, Middle, and High School were placed on short lockdowns, here’s what we know.
According to the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office PIO Jessica Drake, the lockdowns were in response to a report of a suicidal subject in the Greenbrier Elementary School parking lot. After further investigation, it was determined to be a swatting call.
Swatting is the act of making a false report to emergency services, typically claiming a serious incident like a hostage situation or a threat of violence, in order to trigger a large-scale law enforcement response, such as a SWAT team being dispatched. The intention is usually to cause disruption or distress to the targeted individual or location.
The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office, the Greenbrier Police Department, the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency, the Greenbrier Fire Department, and (we’re told) the Department of Homeland Security assisted.
According to Robertson County School’s PIO Jim Bellis, there was no disruption to classroom activities, and all students were reported safe by Robertson County Schools.
Smokey Barn News has learned that Robertson County may not have been the only county affected. At least one school in Davidson County received a similar swatting call this morning and we’re told other districts may have been affected. Sumner County, however, reported no such incident. We did not reach out to all surrounding districts. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
From the city of Greenbrier: “The City of Greenbrier is extremely thankful for the swift actions of all responding agencies to the potential threat in our community. At 8:44 am this morning, a call was dispatched out to all area agencies for a potential threat regarding a shooter. The elementary school was placed on a hard lockdown while all agencies responded and determined that the threat was not credible, and the school’s lockdown was lifted. Thank you to the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office and SROs, Greenbrier Police Department, Greenbrier Fire Department, Robertson County EMA, TWRA and the TBI for your swift response to keep our families safe.”
Robertson County law enforcement has a strong track record of identifying individuals responsible for swatting calls. In this incident, if multiple counties were targeted, it means that numerous law enforcement agencies across a larger area are now invested in finding the person or group responsible, increasing the odds that they will be identified.
As a precaution, law enforcement will maintain an increased presence at the schools in Greenbrier so you may see them through the day.
