I-24 W Below Hwy 49 CLOSED Due To Double Fatal Crash

ROBERTSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – I-24 West heading into Coopertown from Nashville was closed for several hours Friday following a double fatal crash involving entrapment. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), a wrong-way driver crashed head-on with another vehicle with three teenagers onboard. Both drivers were killed in the crash, the first call coming into 911 at 2:13 AM.
UPDATE: The Tennessee Highway Patrol is now releasing more information about this crash, according to their preliminary report obtained by Smokey Barn News, the crash claimed two lives (both drivers) and injured two others. Authorities say 38-year-old Joshua Tregoning of Tennessee was driving a 2019 Kia Optima eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-24 (heading in the wrong direction) when his vehicle collided head-on with a 2021 Hyundai Elantra carrying three teenagers. The driver of the Hyundai, a 17-year-old juvenile female, and Tregoning were both fatally injured in the crash. Both Tregoning and the other driver (a minor 16-year-old teen) were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Both 18-year-old Jaylen Mitchell, and a 16-year-old male juvenile, survived the crash but were injured. The 16-year-old male was not wearing safety restraints. The crash remains under investigation.
Why Joshua Tregoning was heading in the wrong direction on the interstate remains unclear. The names of the teen minors have been redacted by the THP.

The crash was positioned on I 24 West between Hwy 49 (Coopertown and exit 31 (New Hope Rd. MAP Multiple agencies, including the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the crash. I-24 was CLOSED for several hours while the THP conducted their investigation. Traffic was diverted at EXIT 31.
This was the second double fatal crash to occur in the Robertson County area on Friday. On Friday evening two children were killed in a rollover crash on Hwy 161 just outside Springfield and the driver was taken into custody. Click here for our full report.
