I-65 South Reopens After Horse Transport Crash Near Millersville

SUMNER COUNTY, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – I-65 South reopened Sunday after being shut down for four hours following a crash involving a horse transport vehicle.

According to Lt. Michael Fuqua with the Goodlettsville Fire Department, the first call came into 911 at 1:30 p.m. The crash occurred on I-65 South just above Millersville, near the Robertson–Sumner County line, as motorists exit Robertson County and enter Sumner County. LOCATION OF CRASH

A horse transport vehicle overturned onto its side, trapping horses inside. Fire crews and emergency responders worked for several hours to safely access and remove the animals. Lt. Michael Fuqua told Smokey Barn News that the trailer was on its right side and the horses were thrown throughout the trailer, piling up on top of each other. The driver was out and walking around when crews arrived; he sustained only minor injuries.

A veterinarian responded to the scene and administered pain medication to the horses. While some sustained noticeable cuts and injuries, officials said all of the horses were able to walk under their own power.

Agencies responding included the Goodlettsville Fire Department, Goodlettsville Police Department, Sumner County EMS, Sumner County EMA, TDOT, NFD Engine 39. Traffic was diverted while crews worked the scene and removed the vehicle. The interstate has since fully reopened. PHOTOS: GFD
