Motorist Killed In Train Vs Car Collision In Springfield
SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A vehicle has been struck by a train in Springfield.
The crash occurred around 10:45 PM at the Cheatham St. Crossing. (Location of crash) According to officials at the scene, one person was killed in the crash.
UPDATE: According to the THP, the driver, now identified as 49-year-old David Sowell of Springfield TN, was traveling north on Cheatham Street when he attempted to cross an active railroad crossing. Investigators say Sowell went around a flashing beacon/ crossing guard and was struck by a moving train. Sowell’s vehicle, a 2011 Ford Escape, overturned several times before coming to rest about 200 feet from Cheatham St landing next to the tracks.
The Springfield Fire Department, the Springfield Police Department, Robertson County EMS, the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Emergency Management Agency are currently on the scene.
A number of crossings through Springfield will be blocked while the train is stopped during the investigation.

UPDATE: The THP is leading the investigation into the crash. As soon as they are ready to release their findings, including the identity of the victim, we will bring it to you.
As of 1:30 am the road is now open and the train as cleared.
According to his online obituary, funeral services for Mr. Sowell will be held Friday, February 28, 2020, at 2 pm in the chapel of the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield. Burial will follow at Springfield Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, February 27, 2020, from 4-8 pm and again on Friday from 10 am until the hour of service at 2 pm.
Mr. Sowell had two daughters and one son as well as grandchildren. He was employed at Cleveland Supply. You can read his full online obituary here.
