One Dead in Portland Train Crash Amid Two Separate Train Accidents Friday

SUMNER/DAVIDSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Friday saw two separate train-related accidents in the area, one tragically claiming a life in Portland, Tennessee, and the other involving a three-car derailment in Goodlettsville. Accidents involving trains do not occur with much regularity, at least in our area, so two in one day just a few miles apart is unusual. Here’s what we know:


Fatal Train vs. SUV Crash in Portland

PORTLAND, TENNESSEE: One person has died following a train VS SUV accident at the Butler Road crossing in Portland, Tennessee. LOCATION OF CRASH The crash occurred around 12:30 PM Friday when a train struck an SUV at the crossing. The Highland Volunteer Fire Department confirmed one person, now identified as 66-year-old Shirley Hollan, died in the crash, Shirley was pronounced deceased at the scene.

NEW – According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Hollan was driving a 2011 Ford Explorer (pictured) north on Butler Road when she attempted to cross the railroad tracks. An eastbound train was approaching as Hollan reportedly disregarded the crossing signal and attempted to cross the tracks, the report stated. The report indicates that Hollan’s vehicle struck the train, overturned onto its roof, and came to rest in a ditch facing south.

Responding agencies included the Highland Volunteer Fire Department, Sumner County EMS, the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, and the Portland Fire Department.

Train Derailment in Goodlettsville

GOODLETTSVILLE, TENNESSEE: Earlier in the day, at approximately 8:15 AM, three train cars derailed near 500 South Cartwright Street in Goodlettsville. LOCATION OF CRASH  According to Kenneth Reeves with the Goodlettsville Fire Department, the derailed cars were hauling coal but were empty at the time. There was no chemical involvement, and no injuries were reported.

CSX Railroad is on the scene addressing the derailment, and while the tracks sustained damage, the incident did not affect vehicle traffic or intersections. CSX Railroad crews are working to re-rail the cars, but it may be into Saturday before they are repositioned on the tracks.
