REPORT UPDATED

COOPERTOWN TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Traffic was slow on I24 west Sunday night near Coopertown after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a passing vehicle.

The accident occurred near the 23.8-mile marker around 11:03 pm and sits just west of the Hwy 49 exit. LOCATION OF ACCIDENT

Why the person was on the interstate is still unclear. I24 was slow for several hours while the Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated the accident. Officials initially closed I24 West then quickly reopened one lane.

The victim, now identified as 60-year-old Lonnie S. Sanders of  Alexandria, TN, was pronounced deceased at the scene. According to officials at the scene, the pedestrian was struck by a pickup.

The THP has released their preliminary description of the accident, it does not, however, offer any insight as to why Sanders was walking on the interstate.  According to the THP, the pickup, driven by a 45-year-old Clarksville man, was traveling West on Interstate 24 in the right lane and the pedestrian (Sanders) was on the same roadway, walking in the right lane around the 23.8-mile marker. The pickup attempted to swerve into the left lane, colliding with the pedestrian. The pickup came to final controlled rest approximately 75 yards away on the left shoulder. The pedestrian came to rest approximately 15 feet away on the right shoulder. The pedestrian was unresponsive and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
