ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – The Robertson County Schools Nutrition Department recently experimented with an innovative idea when a local farm producer was asked to supply strawberries to several district schools.

Michael Shepard and his father Steve, owners of The Strawberry Patch at Shepard Farms in Cedar Hill, responded to the request with fresh-picked berries. Their supply began with the two Jo Byrns schools and eventually has now included several others.

Shephard said he was happy to be a part of the project and hoped that the partnership would continue and grow.

For her part, Nutrition Supervisor Mrs. Patsi Gregory has been looking forward to sourcing local produce for quite a while and is quite happy with the initial results.

“Being able to partner with a local family farm to provide fresh strawberries to students in a few of our schools has been an exciting opportunity for the School Nutrition Program,” she said. “This is something we’ve wanted to do for several years but have failed to see it become a reality, until now. We hope to be able to continue and expand this in the future.”
