Springfield Man Arrested Following Sunday Morning Gunfire Incidents

UPDATE: May 21, 2025

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Springfield Police have made an arrest in connection with the two early morning gunfire incidents that occurred on Sunday, May 18.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Tyrese Cogshell of Springfield, is facing a charge of reckless endangerment. Cogshell is an employee of the City of Springfield, working in the department responsible for city grounds maintenance, including lawn care. Cogshell was processed at the Robertson County Detention facility in Springfield on Wednesday at 10:50 p.m. under a $25,000 bond. He bonded out 43 minutes later.

There were two shootings late Saturday, early Sunday. The first occurred just after 12:30 a.m. on Moreland Drive. Officers responding to a shots-fired call found at least four or five vehicles had been struck by gunfire. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Witnesses told Smokey Barn News that while officers were still on site, additional gunfire was heard nearby. Though not officially confirmed, several sources indicated that the second round of shots may have occurred within earshot of officers already working the scene.

The individuals involved fled before police could make contact.

At 1:37 a.m., roughly an hour later, police responded to a second scene at the Big Lots/Belk parking lot on Memorial Boulevard. Officers recovered multiple shell casings. While investigators have not confirmed whether the two incidents are connected, the timing and proximity suggest a likely link. Proximity MAP

Springfield Police have not released further details regarding motive; however, it is logical to assume that other arrests are likely. Smokey Barn News received numerous calls, text messages, and emails from concerned citizens reporting both incidents.

Springfield has seen a noticeable decline in violent crime in recent years, making Sunday morning’s activity particularly unusual. Investigators are continuing to piece together what triggered the incidents and whether they may point to broader concerns.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Springfield Police at (615) 384-8422.

Smokey Barn News will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
